Chapter 9

By early afternoon, Julian’s black luxury sedan pulled smoothly into the suburban driveway of David and Clara’s home. The neighborhood was quiet, the manicured lawns and identical colonial-style houses basking in the crisp afternoon sun. Julian sat in the driver’s seat for a moment, adjusting the cuffs of his dark blue suit jacket before turning off the engine. He didn't bring Arthur with him; his father was safe back at the penthouse under the care of the night nurse.
Julian stepped out of the car, his leather shoes crunching purposefully against the gravel driveway as he walked up to the front porch. Before he could even raise his hand to knock, the front door swung open. David stood in the threshold, still wearing the same maroon polo shirt, his face twisted in a mixture of defensive anger and rising panic. Clara stood right behind him in her light purple dress, her hands trembling slightly as she gripped the fabric near her collarbone.
"What are you doing back here?" David barked, trying to project an authority he no longer possessed. "You have no business being on this property. I told you, we’re calling the cops for harassment."
"Go ahead and call them, David," Julian said smoothly, stepping up onto the porch and invading David’s personal space until the other man was forced to take a reflexive step backward. "In fact, save them the trouble. I’ve already spoken to the DA’s office and filed a formal criminal complaint for elder abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and fraudulent document fabrication."
Clara gasped, her hand flying up to cover her mouth. "That’s absurd! We took care of him! We gave him a room!"
"You locked him in a concrete garage with a bottle of water and a bag of chips for forty-esight hours while you schemed to steal his estate," Julian said, his voice ringing with a cold, righteous fury that left no room for argument. He reached into his inside jacket pocket and pulled out a crisp, folded legal packet, tossing it so that it landed squarely on the small entryway table inside the open front door.
"That’s a copy of the criminal complaint, along with a signed affidavit from your mobile notary admitting that he failed to conduct a mental competency assessment and that the document was executed under fraudulent conditions," Julian continued, maintaining unbroken eye contact with a pale, sweating David. "The bank has already frozen the trust accounts pending judicial review. Any attempt you make to access my father’s pension or real estate holdings will trigger an immediate felony arrest warrant."
David stared at the packet on the table as if it were a venomous snake. All the bluster and arrogance that had defined his demeanor days earlier had vanished, replaced by the crushing realization of complete defeat. His mouth opened and closed soundlessly, unable to form a coherent defense against the airtight case Julian had constructed in less than twenty-four hours.

"You’re a monster, Julian," Clara hissed from behind her husband, her voice shaking with impotent rage. "You abandoned him first! You left him alone while you chased money in the city! We just stepped up to take the burden!"
Julian turned his gaze slowly toward her, his expression unreadable. "You didn't step up, Clara. You circled like vultures. And now you’re going to pay for every single hour of it."
