Chapter 5

Julian’s penthouse apartment on the thirtieth floor of a sleek downtown high-rise offered a world away from the suburban garage. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed a panoramic view of the city skyline, where sunlight glinted off steel and concrete canyons. Arthur sat in a plush, cream-colored leather armchair, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, staring out at the dizzying height with a mixture of awe and nervous exhaustion.

A private physician, Dr. Marcus, had finished a thorough examination fifteen minutes earlier, confirming severe dehydration, mild hypothermia from the concrete floor, and psychological trauma, but thankfully no permanent physical damage. Dr. Marcus had left a prescription for mild sedatives and strict instructions for rest, leaving Julian and his father alone in the vast, quiet living room.

Julian walked over from the kitchen holding a porcelain mug of chamomile tea with a squeeze of honey, the exact way his father liked it. He knelt beside the armchair, setting the mug on the low walnut coffee table before gently placing it in Arthur’s trembling hands.

"Drink this, Dad. It’ll help settle your stomach," Julian said softly, sitting back on the edge of the sofa.

Arthur took a slow sip, letting out a long sigh as the warmth seemed to spread through his tired body. "It’s nice here, Julian. Very high. You can’t hear the cars."

"You can stay here as long as you want. No one will ever put you in a garage again. You have my word." Julian watched his father closely, noting the subtle trembling in the old man's hands. The immediate physical crisis was managed, but the legal and financial nightmare orchestrated by David and Clara was only just beginning.

"They took my lockbox key," Arthur murmured suddenly, staring down into the dark amber liquid of his tea. "The small metal one from the top drawer of my oak desk. David found it when he helped me pack my winter clothes three weeks ago. I didn't think anything of it then. I trusted him."

Julian’s jaw tightened. "What was inside the lockbox, Dad?"

Arthur looked up, his eyes meeting his son’s with a profound sense of shame. "My original will. The one leaving the Victorian house and the trust fund to you and your sister. David made me sign a codicil revoking it, naming him and Clara as the sole beneficiaries of the estate. He told me it was just an update for tax purposes."

Julian felt a cold spike of adrenaline. The situation wasn't just elder abuse; it was a premeditated financial heist involving forged or coerced legal instruments executed by predatory relatives. He pulled out his smartphone, his thumb swiping across the screen to open his encrypted messaging app.

"We’re going to fix this, Dad. You just rest."
