Chapter 4

Helping Arthur up from the low mattress required careful coordination. Julian slid one strong arm beneath his father’s back and the other under his knees, lifting him with the practiced ease of someone who had carried heavy burdens all his life, both literal and metaphorical. Arthur let out a soft groan of protest, his fragile bones clicking, but he offered no resistance as Julian guided him toward the bright rectangle of the garage door.

"You can't just take him!" Clara shrieked, her voice losing its controlled veneer as she stepped directly into Julian's path. Her hands flew up in an instinctive gesture to block the exit. "We are his legal custodians as of Tuesday afternoon. If you walk out that door with him, I’m calling the police and reporting an abduction."

Julian stopped just a foot away from her. The height difference allowed him to look down into her face with chilling detachment. "Call them, Clara. Tell them you locked a seventy-year-old man with cognitive decline in an uninsulated garage with a bottle of water and a bag of chips. Mention the phrase 'unlawful detention' to the dispatcher and see how fast the patrol cars arrive."

Clara’s mouth opened, but no words came out. She looked past Julian to David, who stood paralyzed in the doorway, suddenly realizing the sheer magnitude of the legal liability they had walked into. The bravado of claiming Arthur’s pension and real estate holdings suddenly evaporated in the harsh light of afternoon reality. They had played a ruthless game of financial opportunism, misjudging Julian’s willingness to fight back.

Julian carefully maneuvered past Clara, carrying his father out of the dim, foul-smelling garage and into the fresh air of the driveway. The contrast was blinding; Arthur squeezed his eyes shut against the sun, burying his face weakly against the dark fabric of Julian's black shirt. Julian could feel the rapid, shallow rhythm of his father’s breathing, a somatic reminder of the trauma the old man had endured over the past forty-eight hours.

"We need to get to the hospital first," Julian muttered to himself, calculating the logistics. "Get you checked for dehydration and exposure."

"No hospital," Arthur rasped, his fingers weakly clutching Julian’s lapel. "Please, Julian. Just take me to your place. I want to smell real coffee. I want to see a window that opens."

"We'll stop at my apartment, but we’re having a doctor come to you," Julian promised, stepping carefully around the gravel toward his luxury sedan parked at the curb.

Behind them, the screen door banged shut again as David retreated inside, slamming it in a petty display of impotent frustration. Clara remained on the porch, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, watching them with a gaze full of venom and defeat. Julian loaded his father into the front passenger seat of the sedan, adjusting the climate control and strapping him in with the gentle care of a parent tending to a child.
