Chapter 12

The following Saturday morning, Julian and Sarah drove out to the quiet suburban neighborhood where Arthur’s original Victorian home stood beneath a canopy of golden maple trees. The house had sat empty for weeks during the legal battle, its wrap-around porch dusted with fallen leaves and the front windows draped in quiet stillness.

Julian parked the sedan in the driveway, turning off the engine and stepping out into the crisp morning air. Sarah stepped out from the passenger side, pulling her jacket tight against the chill as she looked up at the familiar gables and white-trimmed porch of the home where they had grown up.

"It feels strange being back here after everything that happened," Sarah murmured, walking over to join Julian on the paved walkway.

"It’s dad’s house again," Julian replied, pulling a heavy brass key from his pocket—the replacement he had ordered after retrieving the lockbox details. "And we’re going to get it ready for when he’s strong enough to visit, or even move back if he decides he misses the garden."

They walked up the steps and unlocked the front door, stepping inside the spacious foyer. The interior smelled faintly of old books, hardwood polish, and lavender. It was clean, undisturbed by the corporate chaos that had nearly destroyed their family, a stark contrast to the cold, damp garage just a few blocks away where David and Clara had tried to erase their father’s dignity.

Sarah walked into the living room, running her hand along the polished wood of the mantelpiece where family photographs had once stood before David packed them away into cardboard boxes. "We need to clear out all the reminders of what they did. Bring back the old paintings, restore the books, make it feel like home again."

"Already handled," Julian said, holding up a service order on his phone. "A restoration crew is arriving Monday morning to deep-clean every room, repaint the study, and secure the perimeter locks. Not a single trace of David’s presence will remain by Tuesday night."

Sarah turned, walking over to embrace her brother tightly. For the first time in months, the heavy, suffocating anxiety that had gripped their family was completely gone, replaced by a solid, unbreakable bond forged in the crucible of crisis.

"You saved him, Julian," Sarah whispered against his shoulder. "If you hadn't arrived at that exact moment... I don't want to think about what would have happened."

"We saved each other," Julian corrected gently, holding his sister close as the sunlight streamed warmly through the living room windows.
