Chapter 1

The afternoon air outside the suburban garage was heavy with the scent of sun-baked asphalt and cut grass. Julian Vance stood frozen for a fraction of a second, his polished Italian leather shoes gripping the driveway gravel as the screen door slammed shut behind David’s retreating heels. Julian’s dark blue suit jacket, tailored precisely to his athletic frame, pulled tightly across his shoulders as he lunged forward. His black shirt was buttoned to the top, reflecting his rigid discipline, but the vein pulsing fiercely at his temple betrayed the fury boiling underneath.
"Don't touch him! He stays in the garage," David shouted, his maroon polo shirt stretching over his thickening midsection as he planted his feet in the open doorway.
Julian didn't hesitate. He bypassed David with a hard shoulder check that sent the other man stumbling against the aluminum doorframe. The interior of the garage was dim, smelling faintly of motor oil, old cardboard boxes, and damp concrete. In the far corner, illuminated only by the harsh rectangular beam of sunlight cutting through the open door, Arthur Vance sat hunched on a thin, stained mattress laid directly on the cold floor. Arthur was sixty-five, his once-imposing frame shrunken beneath a worn gray cardigan and a light blue cotton shirt. His gray beard was unkempt, his eyes wide and darting with a deep, consuming anxiety as Julian's shadow fell over him.
"You put my father out here?" Julian’s voice dropped an octave, cutting through the shadows with a dangerous, controlled quietness.
David recovered his balance, stepping back into the threshold alongside Clara, his wife. Clara stood in a light purple dress, her face carefully neutral, her fingers nervously tapping against the sleek glass of a smartphone she held like a shield.
"My house, my rules, and his pension comes to me now," David said defensively, lifting his chin as if daring Julian to challenge the legalities of the arrangement.
Julian ignored him, dropping to his knees on the gritty concrete beside the mattress. The cold seeped immediately through the fabric of his expensive trousers, but he didn't care. He pulled out his own smartphone, tapping the screen to turn on the flashlight, illuminating the deep fatigue etched into his father’s lined face.

"How long did they keep you here?" Julian asked, his voice softening just enough for only his father to hear.
Arthur swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "Two days."
