Chapter 6: The Forensic Ledger

Two weeks later, Arthur Sterling walked into the Vanguard terminal holding a thick binder embossed with the seal of the State Auditor’s Office.

Hannah was in the breakroom, sharing a pot of fresh coffee with Hank and two apprentice mechanics.

""We have the complete forensic trace, Hannah,"" Arthur announced, gesturing for her to join him in the private office.

Inside, Arthur laid out the financial anatomy of the betrayal. ""It’s worse than simple embezzlement. Greg and Chloe used Vanguard’s federal carrier identification number to haul non-manifested commercial freight through secondary brokers, pocketing the cash payments while charging the wear, tear, and fuel directly to your corporate credit lines.""

""Is it criminal?"" Hannah asked quietly.

""Federal tax evasion, interstate transport fraud, and commercial identity theft,"" Arthur said. ""The Department of Transportation and the IRS have already opened formal inquiries into Aura Luxe. Greg is facing between five to seven years in federal custody unless he cooperates fully with the restitution recovery.""

Hannah leaned back in her chair, looking through the window at the sunny yard. ""And what happens to Vanguard?""

""Because you flagged the discrepancies, cooperated with the forensic audit, and retained independent oversight, Vanguard is completely shielded as an injured victim entity,"" Arthur explained, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. ""In fact, the court has granted us an emergency summary judgment: Greg’s forty-nine percent equity has been stripped and transferred entirely to you to satisfy the outstanding civil claims.""

Hannah took a deep breath. For the first time in six months, the suffocating weight in her lungs lifted. The company was no longer a joint memory tainted by deceit; it was hers, wholly and completely.
