Chapter 5: The Healing Floor

While the legal battle escalated in Florida, Hannah returned to her roots.

Instead of hiding behind lawyers, she spent her days at the Columbus terminal, stepping into the dispatch office. She worked eighteen-hour shifts, rerouting trucks, negotiating fuel surcharges directly with regional distributors, and personally verifying every maintenance log.

In the quiet hours of the afternoon, she would often sit at the small wooden desk in the back of the trailer—the very desk where she and Greg had celebrated their first profitable month ten years ago with a six-dollar pizza.

Her phone buzzed on the blotter. It was a text from an unknown number:
*Hannah, please. We need to talk. Chloe is threatening to sue me for breach of contract. They’re taking the apartment. I have nowhere to go. Let’s resolve this between us.*

Hannah stared at the screen.

A year ago, a message like that would have made her heart ache. She would have rushed to fix his mess, to cushion his fall, to play the martyr who sacrificed her own peace to keep him whole.

Now, she looked at the grease on her hands, the hum of the warehouse outside where honest men were loading pallets, and felt only an unshakeable, profound clarity.

She tapped the screen and typed four words:
*Speak to my lawyer.*

She blocked the number, set the phone facedown, and picked up the next dispatch manifest.
