Chapter 13: The Highway at Dawn

One year after the confrontation in the kitchen, Hannah did something she hadn't done in ten years: she climbed into the cab of a brand-new Vanguard semi-truck at 4:30 AM.

Holding a commercial driver’s license she had maintained since her early twenties, Hannah took the wheel of the lead rig carrying emergency medical supplies and pediatric incubators to a newly opened children’s hospital in Cleveland.

Beside her in the convoy were Hank and three young apprentice drivers.

As the massive truck rumbled onto Interstate 71, the headlights pierced the morning fog, illuminating the wide, open asphalt ahead.

The sun broke over the eastern horizon in a breathtaking explosion of gold, violet, and crimson. The flat farmland of Ohio stretched outward, boundless and free under the morning sky.

Hannah gripped the steering wheel, feeling the steady, powerful vibration of the 500-horsepower engine responding to her touch.

There was no shouting, no spilled coffee, no deceit. There was only the clean, honest hum of machinery doing good work, carrying healing supplies to children who needed them, powered by a company built on truth.

She tapped the horn twice, hearing the deep, resonant blast roll across the open valley like a declaration of absolute freedom.
