Chapter 2: The Paper Trail

By midnight, the modern suburban home felt like a crime scene.

Arthur Sterling sat at the dining table with his laptop open, flanked by stacks of bank statements, property deeds, and vehicle titles. Hannah had changed out of her fleece bathrobe into a simple grey woolen sweater and jeans, sitting with a warm mug of chamomile tea she had barely touched.

Greg had left hours earlier, taking only a duffel bag and his car keys after Arthur served him with an emergency temporary restraining and asset-freezing order.

""He was sloppy, Hannah,"" Arthur said, turning the laptop screen toward her. ""Men who commit financial infidelity alongside marital infidelity almost always believe they are the smartest people in the room. Look here.""

Hannah looked at the spreadsheet. Over the past fourteen months, small, systematic withdrawals of $9,500—carefully kept beneath the $10,000 federal reporting threshold—had been routed from *Vanguard Hauling LLC*, the trucking firm she and Greg co-owned, into an entity called *Aura Luxe Logistics* registered in Delaware.

""Chloe isn't just his mistress,"" Arthur explained calmly. ""She’s the registered managing agent of Aura Luxe. Greg was using your joint operating cash flow to capitalize a competing fleet in Florida, intending to declare Vanguard bankrupt in Ohio, leave you with the debts and equipment leases, and walk into a turnkey operation down south.""

Hannah rubbed her temples. The calculated cruelty of it was staggering. It wasn't just a sudden, drunken mistake at an out-of-town freight convention; it was an eighteen-month campaign of economic execution.

""He wanted to leave me with the debt,"" Hannah murmured, her voice flat.

""He tried,"" Arthur replied, closing the laptop with a firm click. ""But what he forgot is that in the state of Ohio, you are the fifty-one percent majority shareholder of Vanguard Hauling. Your signature on the original state charter was never transferred. Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock, we change the locks on the terminal.""
