Chapter 4: The Mirage in Miami

Twelve hundred miles away in a high-rise condo in Brickell, Miami, the reality of the freeze hit like a cold front.
Greg stood on the balcony overlooking Biscayne Bay, a cup of espresso shaking in his hand. Inside the apartment, Chloe was furiously pacing across the Italian porcelain tile, her phone glued to her ear.
""What do you mean the debit card is declined?"" Chloe shrieked into the phone. ""This is an unlimited commercial card under Aura Luxe!""
She slammed the phone down onto the glass table, turning on Greg with venom in her eyes. ""Your wife’s lawyer froze the central sweep accounts! The fuel suppliers in Atlanta are refusing to release our six new leased trucks without a fifty-thousand-dollar cash bond!""
""I told you Hannah was smarter than you thought,"" Greg said, his voice laced with growing panic. ""She built the dispatch software herself, Chloe. She knows where every invoice originates.""
""You told me she was a timid nurse who didn't understand the books!"" Chloe snapped, her glamorous veneer disintegrating into sharp, ugly desperation. ""You told me you had full power of attorney! I invested two hundred thousand dollars of my father’s money into this expansion based on your guarantee that Vanguard’s client list was ours!""
Greg sank onto the white leather sofa, holding his head in his hands.
In this gleaming, sun-drenched condo, surrounded by rented luxury and designer clothes, he suddenly saw what Chloe truly was: an opportunist who saw him not as a partner, but as an easy vehicle to siphon an established business.
The warmth of the kitchen in Ohio, the quiet evenings spent sharing simple meals after sixteen-hour workdays—he had traded an empire of substance for a rented view of the ocean.

""Call your bank, Greg,"" Chloe demanded, standing over him with crossed arms. ""Fix this, or you can find somewhere else to sleep tonight.""
