Chapter 9: Into the Underground

The subway station smelled of damp concrete, ozone, and old paper. The subterranean platform was crowded with morning commuters rushing past in thick coats and woolen scarves, providing the perfect cover of anonymity for Elena, Leo, and Marcus. Elena kept Leo bundled in his gray blanket, holding him close as they descended the concrete stairs behind Marcus.
They blended into the flow of passengers boarding an inbound train, finding seats near the center doors of the crowded car. The train jerked forward with a metallic screech, accelerating smoothly into the dark tunnel. The rhythmic clatter of the tracks provided a strange, hypnotic soundtrack to their desperate escape.
Elena looked down at Leo, who rested his head against her shoulder, his breathing steady and calm. The terrifying events of the past twenty-four hours seemed like a distant nightmare, yet the heavy hard drive in her pocket was a constant reminder of the reality they faced. They were fighting a multi-billion-dollar institution that viewed human lives as acceptable losses on a corporate balance sheet.
"Are we going home, Mommy?" Leo whispered softly, his eyes heavy with fatigue.
"We're going to a safe place, sweetie," Elena replied, kissing the top of his head. "And then we're going to make sure nobody else ever gets hurt the way you did."
Marcus sat across from them, keeping a watchful eye on the passengers boarding and exiting at each station. He pulled a notepad from his trench coat, scribbling notes about the federal inspector they were scheduled to meet. "Agent Vance—no relation, thankfully—is an old contact of mine from my reporting days. She heads the regional oversight division for medical ethics. She can't be bought, and she hates corporate corruption more than I do."
"How long until we reach the station?" Elena asked, her eyes scanning the faces of the people around them.

"Two more stops," Marcus replied, folding his notepad. "Just stay calm. Nobody knows we're on this train."
As if on cue, the train’s public address system crackled to life, broadcasting a transit alert that made Elena’s blood run cold. “Attention passengers, please be advised that City Hall station is currently closed due to police activity. All trains will bypass this stop until further notice.”
