Chapter 5: The Abandoned Office

Dawn broke over the city in shades of slate gray and bruised purple. Elena drove the stolen delivery van to an industrial park on the outskirts, parking behind a derelict warehouse where her old architectural firm used to store drafting tables and blueprints before the business collapsed. She kept the keys, guiding a sleepy Leo into the dry, dusty interior of the building. Sunlight filtered through high, grime-covered windows, casting long, geometric shadows across the concrete floor.
Her old office cubicle remained untouched in the corner, complete with an older model desktop computer that still hummed to life when plugged into the wall outlet. Elena brushed a layer of dust from the monitor, her hands steady as she retrieved the flash drive from her pocket. She slid the tiny device into the USB port on the front of the tower.
A folder named Project Lazarus appeared on the screen almost instantly. Elena double-clicked the icon, revealing dozens of encrypted video files and financial spreadsheets detailing multi-million-dollar payouts to families who had signed strict non-disclosure agreements following surgical complications at the hospital.
"Mommy, what is that?" Leo asked, sipping from a small bottle of water Elena had found in the van's glove compartment.
"Just some old records, buddy," Elena said, her voice tight as she opened a video file dated three weeks prior.
The video loaded with a soft hiss of audio static. It showed a medical conference room where the chief of cardiothoracic surgery was addressing a panel of executives. The audio was crystal clear. The surgeon calmly discussed an experimental valve replacement device, noting an alarming failure rate in early pediatric trials. Instead of halting the trials, the hospital administration had chosen to fast-track the procedures to secure federal funding, deliberately concealing the risks from parents.
Elena gripped the edge of the metal desk so hard her knuckles turned white. The realization that Leo had been used as an expendable test subject made her stomach churn with a sickening fury. They hadn't just made a mistake; they had committed calculated murder by negligence.

"They knew," Elena whispered to the empty room, her reflection staring back at her from the dark monitor glass.
She began downloading the entire folder to a portable hard drive she found in her old desk drawer, ensuring she had multiple copies of the evidence. If the hospital discovered the breach, they would try to wipe the servers and bury her along with the files. She needed to get this information to someone outside the corporate medical network before their pursuers tracked the van's license plate.
