Chapter 2: Shadows in the Hallway

The heavy double doors of the cafeteria swung shut behind them, cutting off the murmurs of the stunned medical staff. Elena kept one arm securely around Leo, who shuffled forward while still cocooned in the gray blanket. The hospital corridor stretched endlessly under harsh white lights, smelling faintly of antiseptic and despair. Every shadow seemed to stretch and distort, masking the presence of administrators and security guards who might try to block their exit. Elena’s mind raced through her legal options, but laws meant nothing in a place where medical records could be altered with a single keystroke.

"Mom, my chest hurts," Leo murmured, his voice barely audible over the hum of the overhead ventilation system.

Elena stopped instantly, crouching down to his eye level despite the restrictive fit of her gray suit jacket. She placed her palm flat against his sternum, feeling the irregular thumping beneath his ribs. Panic threatened to choke her, but she swallowed it down, forcing her expression to remain steady for his sake. She could not afford to break. If she showed fear, Leo would shatter completely.

"Just a little longer, sweetie," Elena said, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead. "We are going to find a doctor who tells the truth. We are going to find someone who actually cares about your heart."

Footsteps echoed from the intersecting hallway ahead. Two security guards in navy uniforms rounded the corner, their walk purposeful and measured. Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She grabbed Leo’s hand, pulling him into a nearby recessed doorway that led to an unoccupied supply closet. The door was unlocked, yielding with a quiet click. Inside, the air was dense with the scent of fresh linens and chemical cleaners. Metal shelves lined the walls, stacked with neatly folded sheets and boxes of surgical masks.

They stood in near darkness, listening as the heavy boots of the guards passed right outside the thin wooden door. The rhythmic scuff of soles on linoleum felt deafening in the enclosed space. Elena held her breath, her hand clamped gently over Leo’s mouth to muffle any accidental sounds. Through the narrow gap in the door hinges, she watched the uniform trousers move past. The danger felt palpable, a physical weight pressing down on her shoulders.

When the footsteps finally faded into the distance, Elena let out a long, shuddering breath. She looked down at Leo, whose eyes reflected the dim sliver of light cutting through the doorway. They couldn't stay in the hospital much longer. The entire facility was a cage, and the wardens were closing in.
