Chapter 4: Breaking Out into the Cold

Navigating the labyrinthine service corridors of the hospital required patience and nerve. Elena kept Leo close, his small hand tightly gripping the fabric of her gray suit jacket as they navigated past automated laundry carts and buzzing vending machines. They avoided the main elevators, opting instead for the concrete stairwells that echoed with every footstep. The descent felt like a journey into the underworld, each flight bringing them closer to the subterranean loading docks where delivery trucks idled in the biting night air.
When they reached the heavy metal exit door, Elena cracked it open an inch. The damp winter wind rushed in, carrying the scent of wet asphalt and exhaust fumes. Outside, a delivery van from a linen supply company was idling near the loading bay while the driver tossed bundles of sheets into the back. It was their ticket out.
"Stay right here in the shadows," Elena whispered to Leo, tucking the gray blanket more securely around his shoulders.
She waited for the driver to turn his back, climbing into the front cab of the van with calculated speed. The keys were dangling right from the ignition. Her heart raced as she slid into the driver's seat, adjusting the mirrors with practiced efficiency. She threw the vehicle into reverse, backing slowly away from the loading bay before turning the wheel toward the exit gates.
As the van crested the incline toward the main street, the automated security arm lifted automatically for commercial vehicles, allowing them to slip past unnoticed into the sprawling metropolis. The city lights blurred into streaks of gold and neon through the rain-spattered windshield. Elena drove for twenty minutes without a destination in mind, her knuckles white on the steering wheel, before turning down a quiet residential street lined with leafless oak trees.
She parked behind a shuttered bakery, cutting the engine and plunging the cab into silence. The heater hummed softly, blowing lukewarm air toward Leo, who had curled up across the passenger seat, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. Elena turned in her seat, gently pulling the blanket up to his chin.

"We're safe for tonight," she murmured, though she didn't believe her own words.
She pulled the flash drive from her pocket, turning the small piece of plastic over in her palm. The real battle was just beginning, and she needed a computer to unlock the secrets buried within its digital memory.
