Chapter 9: The Confrontation in the Dark

The amber reading lamps cast long, erratic shadows across the library floor as Elena stepped out of the service lift, her heels clicking softly against the Persian rug. She held the metal tray steady, the glass vials catching the dim light. Her usual warmth was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve that made her look like a stranger in her own home.
“You always were too smart for your own good, Luca,” Elena said, stopping a few feet away from the motorized wheelchair. She kept her eyes locked on his, showing no hesitation. “Building an empire makes you arrogant. You actually believed you could just sit in that chair and let someone else control your life without consequences.”
Luca gripped the heavy brass paperweight hidden beneath his right hand, keeping his posture upright and imposing despite his lack of mobility. “You poisoned me, Elena. Day after day, you administered a neuromuscular inhibitor under the guise of therapy.”
Elena let out a short, cold laugh that lacked any genuine humor. “Poison is such a crude word, darling. I preserved your comfort. If your muscles had started recovering naturally six months ago, the corporate board would have forced you back into the boardroom. We would have lost everything to your endless ambitions. I simply gave us both stability.”
“You gave yourself control and left me trapped in my own body,” Luca countered, his voice steady and controlled, masking the fury burning inside him.
“And it worked brilliantly—until Maya decided to play detective,” Elena said, her gaze shifting slightly toward the mahogany desk where the young girl was hidden. “Speaking of which, where is your little accomplice? Hiding under the furniture isn't going to save her from the reality of our situation, Luca.”
“Leave Maya out of this,” Luca warned, his fingers tightening around the metal paperweight.
“She is part of this estate, just like you,” Elena replied, taking another slow step forward, raising one of the syringes from the tray. “And right now, you both need to cooperate. The police are locked out, Clara is locked in the utility closet near the kitchen, and no one is coming to help you.”
From beneath the desk, a faint rustle betrayed Maya’s position. Elena’s eyes snapped toward the sound, a cruel smile touching the corners of her lips. She began to angle her steps around the side of the desk, moving away from Luca to get a clear line of sight.
Luca didn't hesitate. With a sharp surge of adrenaline, he threw his weight forward, slamming his hand onto the joystick of his motorized wheelchair. The heavy chair lurched forward with surprising speed, colliding squarely with Elena’s hip and sending the metal tray flying from her hands.
The glass vials shattered against the marble hearth, the amber liquid splattering across the stones.
Elena stumbled backward, letting out a sharp gasp of shock as she hit the edge of the bookshelf, sending a cascade of heavy hardcover books tumbling down around her.
“Run, Maya!” Luca shouted, spinning his chair around to block Elena’s path as she struggled to regain her footing.

Maya scrambled out from beneath the desk, her eyes wide with terror, and bolted toward the main library doors, her small fingers fumbling frantically with the brass deadbolt.
