Chapter 8: Digital Shadows

The blue light of the monitor illuminated Luca’s focused face as he navigated the encrypted file directory. His fingers moved with practiced efficiency, bypassing the standard user interface and logging directly into the root server via his master override credentials. On the other side of the heavy oak doors, the silence returned, signaling that Elena had either given up her verbal appeals or was preparing a more drastic measure.

“Are you finding the bad papers, Daddy?” Maya whispered, leaning forward in the velvet armchair, her small chin resting on her hands.

“I’m finding the financial trail, sweetheart,” Luca murmured, his eyes scanning rows of transaction codes and pharmacy delivery logs. “People can lie with their words, but digital ledgers are notoriously stubborn.”

As he opened the pharmaceutical acquisition folder, his breath caught in his throat. The entries confirmed his worst fears. For the past fourteen months—coinciding precisely with the period when Dr. Vance’s visits abruptly stopped—the estate account had been receiving regular shipments of a controlled neuro-muscular inhibitor, a potent substance typically used in heavy surgical anesthesia, completely unauthorized for outpatient rehabilitation. Worse, the delivery addresses were routed through a shell company registered under Elena’s maiden name.

Luca’s jaw tightened. She wasn't just managing his care; she was systematically poisoning his nervous system to prevent any natural recovery, ensuring that his muscles atrophied while she bled his corporate accounts dry.

A soft click echoed near the side panel of the library.

Luca whipped his head around, his hand instinctively gripping the armrest of his motorized wheelchair. The private service elevator, concealed behind a sliding bookshelf panel, began to hum softly. The indicator light above the bronze doors shifted from red to green.

He had completely forgotten about the private service lift connecting the west wing directly to the library’s lower level.

“Maya, get under the desk,” Luca ordered sharply, his voice dropping into a fierce, urgent register.

“I want to stay with you—”

“Under the desk, now!” Luca repeated, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Maya scrambled off the velvet armchair and dove beneath the heavy mahogany overhang, curling into a small ball near the computer tower.

Luca spun his wheelchair around, positioning himself directly between the desk and the descending elevator. He reached down to the concealed compartment beneath his seat, his fingers brushing against the cold steel of the heavy antique paperweight he had kept there since his corporate days. It wasn't much of a weapon, but it gave him a tangible sense of agency.

The service elevator doors slid open with a quiet hiss.

Standing inside the small cabin, bathed in fluorescent light, was Elena. The elegance of her red slip dress was slightly ruffled, and her usual composure was fractured by a wild, desperate glint in her eyes. In her hand, she no longer held just a single syringe; she held a metal tray containing three fully loaded vials and a sleek electronic override pad.

“You really should have locked the service lift, Luca,” Elena said softly, stepping out into the shadowed library with slow, deliberate strides.
