Chapter 7: The Library Fortress

The heavy oak doors of the estate library swung shut with a reassuring, solid thud, and Luca immediately reached down to slide the interior brass deadbolt into place. The library smelled of old leather, aged paper, and polished mahogany—a sanctuary of intellectual history within a house that had recently turned into a cage. Tall floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, casting deep shadows in the amber glow of the reading lamps.
Maya stayed close to Luca’s side as he maneuvered the motorized wheelchair behind the large oak executive desk. The thick Persian rug muffled the hum of the wheels, creating an atmosphere of intense, concentrated isolation.
“Will she try to get in here?” Maya asked, her voice barely a whisper as she climbed onto the velvet armchair facing the desk.
“Not easily,” Luca replied, resting his hands on the polished wood surface. “These doors are reinforced, and the security panel for this wing can only be overridden from this terminal or the main security console in the foyer.”
He pulled the sleek keyboard toward him and pressed the power button on the concealed desktop computer integrated into the woodwork. The screen flickered to life, casting a cool blue light over his handsome, tired face. He knew Elena had administrator privileges, but he had retained master override codes from back when he ran the estate’s technology infrastructure—codes she likely assumed he had forgotten in the fog of his prolonged medication-induced lethargy.
As the operating system booted up, Luca’s thoughts drifted back to the syringe and the pale amber liquid. If Elena had been substituting his prescribed neurological stabilizers with a paralytic or a sedative, her goal wasn't just financial control; it was keeping him physically dependent indefinitely. The medical log Clara was trying to retrieve would prove the tampering, but the digital files on the secure server would reveal the financial transfers tied to the illicit drug shipments.
A sharp tap echoed against the heavy oak library doors.
Maya flinched, biting her lower lip and looking anxiously toward the entrance.
“Luca,” Elena’s voice filtered through the wood, surprisingly calm and melodic, yet carrying a chilling undertone. “Open the door, darling. Hiding in the library won't change the reality of your condition. You need your evening dose, or the nerve pain will start acting up again. You know how unbearable the spasms get when you miss a schedule.”
Luca did not answer. He kept his fingers hovering over the keyboard, watching the progress bar on the screen as it accessed the encrypted medical database.
“Clara already told me what you asked her to look for,” Elena continued, her tone shifting slightly, turning sharp and transactional. “You are only making things difficult for yourself, Luca. Sign the restructuring papers tomorrow morning, and I will ensure you receive the proper, authentic treatment. Otherwise, this estate becomes your permanent, inescapable medical ward.”
Maya looked up at Luca with fierce, tear-free determination, shaking her head vigorously. Don't listen to her, her expression seemed to say.
May you like
Luca took a deep, steadying breath, his fingers flying across the keys as the database interface finally loaded on the screen.
