Chapter 12: Rebuilding the Foundation

The morning sun broke through the heavy autumn clouds, casting a warm, golden glow across the marble floors of the grand hallway where the nightmare had begun just days before. The police investigation was moving swiftly, with Elena’s financial records and the chemical remnants from the library hearth providing an airtight case for the district attorney. The shell companies had been frozen, and Luca’s corporate legal team had already begun the process of restoring full administrative control to his personal accounts.

Luca sat in his motorized wheelchair near the open French doors of the library, breathing in the crisp, clean morning air. Beside him stood Dr. Harrison, the newly appointed neurologist who had replaced Dr. Vance after the deception came to light. The physician was reviewing a fresh set of electromyography readouts on a digital tablet, his expression a mix of professional astonishment and cautious optimism.

“The muscular atrophy is severe, Luca, there’s no denying that,” Dr. Harrison said, tapping the screen with a stylus. “The neuro-inhibitor Elena was administering essentially forced your nervous system into a state of chemical hibernation. But the baseline reflexes we are seeing today are miraculous. Your body fought to heal even while it was being suppressed.”

“Because I had a reason to fight,” Luca said softly, glancing over toward the courtyard where Maya was playing chase with a golden retriever puppy Clara had arranged to adopt for her.

“Well, your determination is going to require physical discipline,” Dr. Harrison replied with an encouraging smile. “Rigorous physical therapy, starting today. We need to retrain the muscle memory, rebuild the core strength, and get you standing with support within the month.”

“I plan on standing much sooner than that,” Luca said, his dark eyes carrying a fierce, unyielding resolve.

Later that afternoon, the first formal physical therapy session began in the estate’s private gymnasium. The room, previously neglected and dusty, had been thoroughly cleaned and prepped with parallel bars, resistance bands, and weighted pulleys. Clara stood near the door holding a tray of water, while Maya sat on a padded bench nearby, acting as her father's official cheerleader.

Luca transferred from his motorized wheelchair to the sturdy wooden parallel bars with the assistance of a trained physical therapist named Marcus. His arms shook slightly from the exertion, bearing the weight of a body that had spent over a year sedentary, but his upper body strength held firm.

“Hold onto the rails, Luca, take your time,” Marcus instructed, positioning himself closely behind him.

Luca gripped the polished wooden bars, his knuckles turning white as he channeled every ounce of his willpower into his lower body. He took a deep, controlled breath, closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, and willed his right foot forward.
