Chapter 4: The Absent Physician

The name of Dr. Vance hung in the grand hallway like a dropped weight. Elena stared down at Luca, her fingers tightening around the leather-bound medical log until her knuckles turned white. For a moment, the polished, confident socialite vanished, replaced by a cornered strategist calculating her next move. The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating, interrupted only by the faint ticking of the grandfather clock near the library entrance.

“Dr. Vance is in Zurich for the international neurology symposium, Luca,” Elena said smoothly, her voice regaining its careful cadence as she smoothed down the front of her red slip dress. “You know that. His secretary confirmed it in our weekly email update. We cannot simply summon him back on a whim because Maya had a bad dream.”

Luca maintained his steady, unblinking gaze, the doubt in his mind solidifying into certainty. “Dr. Vance’s symposium was last month, Elena. He told me personally before his last scheduled visit that he would be stateside all through the autumn.”

Elena’s lips parted slightly, a micro-expression of trapped panic flashing across her features before she quickly masked it behind a mask of hurt affection. “Your memory has been so unreliable since the accident, darling. You confuse dates constantly. It breaks my heart to see you struggle like this.”

Maya let out a frustrated breath, her small chest heaving. “He remembers everything! He remembered where we hid the Christmas ornaments last year when you forgot!”

“Maya, go to your room,” Elena said, her tone hardening into a sharp command that brooked no argument.

The little girl did not move an inch. Instead, she stepped directly in front of Luca’s motorized wheelchair, planting her small shoes firmly on the marble floor as if she were a shield protecting him from an approaching storm. “I’m staying here. You want to hurt him more so he never stands up again.”

Clara stood frozen by the mahogany desk, holding her breath, acutely aware that she was witnessing a fracture in the household that could never be repaired. She cast a sympathetic glance at Luca, silently praying he would see through the polished lies.

Luca reached down with his right hand and gently rested his palm on Maya’s shoulder, feeling the tension in the child's muscles. He looked up at Elena, the warmth completely gone from his dark eyes. The handsome man in the black suit no longer looked like a helpless invalid; the sharp, analytical mind that had built his empire was fully awake, assessing the threat standing before him.

“If Dr. Vance is unreachable,” Luca said, his voice quiet and dangerously controlled, “then we will contact Dr. Harrison at the city hospital. He can review my current pharmaceutical profile immediately.”

Elena took a half-step forward, the syringe in her hand catching the light of the chandelier. Her expression hardened from defensive to visibly desperate. “You will do no such thing, Luca. You are my husband, and I am legally entrusted with your daily care. You are not of sound mind to make unilateral medical decisions while under the influence of these neurological fluctuations.”

“Try me,” Luca replied softly.
