Chapter 6: Shadows in the West Wing

The heavy electronic chime of the security gates locking echoed through the high ceilings of the grand hallway, sealing the perimeter of the estate. Clara exhaled a long, shaky breath, her hand dropping away from the intercom panel. The silence that followed felt different now—not the oppressive stillness of deceit, but the charged quiet of a siege.

Luca sat motionless in his motorized wheelchair, his dark eyes fixed on the arched corridor where Elena had vanished. His mind raced, connecting the fragmented memories of the past year: the inexplicable exhaustion, the strange metallic taste in his morning tea, the subtle ways his physical therapy sessions had been scaled back under Elena's direct supervision. She hadn't just been administering medicine; she had been keeping him trapped in the twilight between recovery and permanent disability.

“Are you okay, Daddy?” Maya asked softly, her small hand reaching out to tug gently at the sleeve of his black suit.

Luca forced a reassuring smile, softening his features for his daughter. He looked down at her, feeling a fierce surge of protective love that overshadowed his own physical limitations. “I’m alright, sweetheart. You were very brave today. Much braver than I was.”

“I saw what she was doing every night when you went to sleep,” Maya whispered, leaning close so Clara wouldn't overhear. “She had a little black box in her closet with lots of needles and little glass bottles. She said if I told anyone, they would take me away to a boarding school.”

Luca’s jaw tightened. The realization that Elena had threatened his daughter made the anger burn hotter, but he knew he had to channel that fury into disciplined action. He looked up at Clara, who was nervously twisting the hem of her apron.

“Clara, I need you to go to my private study,” Luca instructed, his voice low and commanding. “In the bottom drawer of the mahogany desk, behind the false panel, there is a physical key. It unlocks the biometric safe in the master bedroom closet. Bring me the backup encrypted hard drive inside it.”

Clara swallowed hard, her eyes darting nervously toward the west wing. “Mr. Thorne, if Mrs. Elena catches me in the master bedroom—”

“She won't catch you,” Luca interrupted, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute conviction. “She is currently barricading herself in her private quarters, trying to destroy whatever records she kept on her computer. You have five minutes before she realizes we are securing evidence.”

Clara nodded once, her fear momentarily conquered by her loyalty to the family she had served for over a decade. She turned quickly, her footsteps echoing softly against the marble floor as she hurried toward the grand staircase.

Luca turned his wheelchair around, the electric motor humming quietly. “Maya, come with me. We are going to the library. It has the heavy oak doors with the interior deadbolt.”

“Can your legs walk yet, Daddy?” Maya asked hopefully, her eyes wide as she trotted beside the motorized chair.

May you like

“Not yet, Maya,” Luca said honestly, a grim resolve settling in his chest. “But they are going to. And when they do, we are going to walk right out of this house.”
