Chapter 8 - The Locked Room

The sweet, sickly smell of chemical fog began to drift downward from the ceiling vents, wrapping around Evelyn’s ankles like cold fingers. The air grew instantly thick and heavy, burning the back of her throat with the unmistakable taint of military-grade CS gas.

"Hold your breath!" Julian ordered sharply, grabbing Evelyn’s arm and hauling her backward toward the heavy steel desk as the automated ventilation system groaned and shut down entirely, trapping the dense aerosol cloud inside the subterranean vault.

Evelyn pulled the collar of her uniform shirt tightly across her nose and mouth, her eyes stinging from the caustic vapor. Through the hazy red glow of the emergency lights, she saw the shadow of Eleanor moving swiftly toward a hidden maintenance hatch located behind the main server racks.

"She's escaping!" Evelyn coughed, wrenching her arm free from Julian's grip and lunging across the room.

"Evelyn, wait! It's a trap!" Julian shouted, coughing violently as he chased after her through the blinding fog.

Evelyn reached the server racks just as Eleanor’s hand gripped the brass handle of the low maintenance tunnel door. With a surge of adrenaline fueled by years of combat conditioning, Evelyn launched herself forward, tackling Eleanor hard against the concrete wall. The porcelain teacup Eleanor had been holding shattered against the floor with a sharp crash, sending fragments flying in all directions.

"You think you've won, you arrogant little fool," Eleanor hissed, struggling fiercely against Evelyn’s grip despite her age, her blonde hair coming undone to frame her face in wild disarray. "Whitaker has already cut the communication lines to the surface. No one knows we're down here, and by noon, this entire basement will be sealed off as an industrial accident."

Julian arrived a second later, grabbing Eleanor by the shoulders and pulling her away from the hatch with practiced, restrained force, pinning her securely against the server cabinets.

"Where is the manual override for the security door?" Julian demanded, his voice strained as he fought off a coughing fit caused by the thickening gas.

Eleanor laughed, blood trickling from a small scratch on her cheek where she had hit the wall. "There is no manual override from the inside, Commander. Whitaker designed this bunker himself back when he was a junior colonel consulting for Vance Enterprises. Once the blast doors drop, they stay locked for twelve hours."

Evelyn ignored them both, her sharp eyes scanning the complex array of wires and circuit breakers exposed behind the open maintenance panel. Through the stinging haze of the gas, her military training kicked in with cold, ruthless efficiency. Her father had designed the early warning logic boards for these exact underground installations.

"Give me your tactical lighter, Julian," Evelyn ordered, her voice cutting through the hiss of the gas valves.

Julian didn't hesitate, reaching into his pocket and tossing the metal lighter through the fog. Evelyn caught it deftly, leaning deep into the exposed wiring harness of the server rack.

"What are you doing?" Eleanor screamed, her composure finally cracking as she realized Evelyn wasn't trying to escape through the tunnel. "You'll fry the entire backup grid! The seismic sensors will trigger a cave-in!"

May you like

"Good," Evelyn muttered coldly, bringing the flame dangerously close to the main data bus. "Let's see how much General Whitaker likes burying his secrets in the dark."
