Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Barracks

The heavy iron gates of Fort McNair clicked shut behind Julian’s military-issue sedan with a dull, echoing thud that seemed to reverberate straight into Evelyn’s aching jaw. The red handprint from Eleanor’s assault still throbbed faintly against her left cheekbone, a visceral reminder of the war they had officially declared under the blinding chandeliers of the Grand Meridian Ballroom. Inside the quiet, austere confines of Evelyn’s quarters, the smell of old paper and polished brass replaced the suffocating scent of expensive perfume and damp anxiety that had defined the Vance family gala. Evelyn dropped her service cap onto the entryway table, the heavy brass insignia clattering against the dark oak wood with a sharp, metallic ring.

Julian stood by the narrow window, watching the distant headlights of security patrols sweep across the asphalt courtyard. His tuxedo jacket was draped over the back of a canvas armchair, his white shirt collar unbuttoned to reveal the tense tendons in his neck.

"She won't go down quietly, Evelyn," Julian said, his voice low and laced with a weary dread that he rarely permitted himself to display in public. "My mother built that empire on thirty years of systemic intimidation, political favors, and buried secrets. If you push the Department of Justice to freeze those accounts tonight, she will pull every string in Washington to bury us both."

Evelyn walked over to her small kitchenette, filling a glass with cold tap water before turning to face him. The fluorescent light overhead cast harsh shadows across her face, accentuating the sharp, unyielding line of her jaw. She took a slow sip, letting the chill ground her racing thoughts.

"Let her pull her strings, Julian," Evelyn said evenly, her dark eyes flashing with a cold, calculated intensity. "For five years, she used the Vance Foundation as her personal piggy bank while covering up the embezzlement by framing my late father for crimes he never committed. The military tribunal has already reviewed the classified ledger I recovered from her private study last Tuesday. Her immunity expired the moment she raised her hand against a serving officer in public."

Julian turned sharply from the window, his expression darkening as he crossed the small room in three long strides. He stopped inches from her, the familiar scent of cedar and gunpowder washing over her senses.

"You didn't tell me you already had the ledger," Julian whispered, a mixture of awe and deep concern coloring his tone. "Evelyn, if that document leaks before the federal magistrate signs the seizure warrant tomorrow morning, Eleanor’s allies in the Senate will have us court-martialed for espionage before breakfast."

Before Evelyn could answer, a sharp, rhythmic pounding echoed against the heavy wooden front door of her quarters, shattering the tense silence of the barracks. Both of them froze instantly, exchanging a single look of absolute realization.
