Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession

The interrogation room at the federal holding facility smelled of cheap disinfectant and stagnant anxiety. The metal table between Evelyn and the assigned public defender, a tired-looking man named Marcus Vance—no relation to the dynasty, thankfully—was bare except for a single plastic cup of lukewarm water. Through the two-way mirror, Evelyn could feel the invisible weight of unseen watchers, most likely corporate lawyers hired by Eleanor to break her spirit before the morning sun rose over the Potomac.
"They’ve frozen your bank accounts, Captain," Marcus said, rubbing his tired eyes behind thick wire-rimmed glasses. "Every asset tied to your name, your military pension, and your father’s estate has been flagged under the Patriot Act provisions for corporate sabotage. If you don't sign this non-disclosure agreement and hand over the encryption keys to the foundation ledger within the hour, they are going to strip you of your rank and throw you into a maximum-security military prison."
Evelyn leaned back in the bolted metal chair, the handcuffs biting slightly into her wrists as she shifted her weight. She felt no fear—only a cold, analytical focus. Eleanor was playing her final, most desperate card, betting everything on the assumption that Evelyn stood alone against the machinery of the Vance corporate empire.
"Marcus, look at the timestamp on that injunction," Evelyn said calmly, sliding the paperwork across the table with her fingertips. "It was filed at 11:45 PM from an IP address registered to a private server in the Cayman Islands, not the Vance corporate headquarters in downtown D.C. That means Eleanor filed these charges while she was still standing in the Grand Meridian Ballroom."
The lawyer blinked, peering down at the document with newfound suspicion. "How could you possibly know the originating IP address?"
"Because my father spent twenty years building the cybersecurity protocols for the Department of Defense," Evelyn replied softly. "Before he died, he installed a secondary tracking daemon on every financial node associated with the Vance family trust. Every time Eleanor authorized an illegal transfer, the system automatically routed a verified duplicate copy to a secure offline vault managed directly by the Joint Chiefs of Staff."
Marcus stared at her, his mouth opening slightly in disbelief. "If the Joint Chiefs have the complete audit trail, why are you sitting in a federal holding cell right now?"
Before Evelyn could answer, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room swung open with a loud metallic crash, and Julian stepped inside, flanked not by military police, but by a towering, silver-haired general wearing the four stars of the Army Chief of Staff.
General Whitaker looked down at Evelyn with a solemn, respectful expression, ignoring the public defender entirely as he pulled a small manila folder from beneath his arm.
"At ease, Captain," the General said, laying the folder flat on the metal table. "Your father’s daemon did its job. Ten minutes ago, the FBI raided Eleanor Vance’s McLean estate. They found her trying to board a private jet to Zurich with three million dollars in bearer bonds."
Evelyn felt a profound wave of relief wash over her, but as she looked up at General Whitaker’s grim face, she realized the nightmare was far from over.
"Sir, where is Eleanor now?" Evelyn asked.
May you like
"That's the problem, Captain," Whitaker replied grimly. "When the agents breached her master bedroom, they found the safe wide open, the bearer bonds scattered across the floor, and Eleanor nowhere to be found."
