Chapter 14 - The Zurich Connection

The satellite feed flickered on the small mobile screen, casting a cold, blue light across Evelyn and Julian’s faces as they stood beneath the sprawling oak trees of Fort McNair. The woman boarding the private jet on the Zurich tarmac walked with the exact same posture, the same measured stride, and the same unmistakable elegance as Eleanor Vance. But the real Eleanor Vance was currently locked inside a high-security federal holding facility three miles away.
"An impostor," Julian breathed, his fingers trembling slightly as he stared at the screen. "All this time—the gala, the interrogation, the vault beneath the estate—she used a double to take the fall while the real mastermind slipped across the Atlantic."
Evelyn’s mind raced through every interaction, every public spectacle, and every calculated move the woman claiming to be Eleanor had made since the night of the centennial gala. The slap to the face, the theatrical demands for money, the deliberate staging of the federal raid—it had all been an elaborate, multi-layered diversion designed to trick the Department of Justice into locking up a decoy while the true architect of the Vance empire secured her escape to Europe.
"She wanted Whitaker out of the way," Evelyn said, the pieces of the terrifying puzzle finally falling into place with absolute clarity. "Whitaker was becoming a liability, threatening to expose the international logistics network if the Senate committee pressed too hard. By feeding Whitaker to us, she cleaned house, eliminated her primary rival in the military industrial complex, and transferred the remaining offshore capital to Zurich under our noses."
Julian slipped his phone back into his pocket, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. "We need to contact Marcus immediately. If the DOJ issues an international red notice right now, Interpol can intercept that flight before it clears Swiss airspace."
"Marcus is part of the Department of Justice, Julian," Evelyn replied coldly, pulling the small black flash drive out of her uniform pocket. "And according to the metadata on this drive, the DOJ's internal routing servers are directly linked to the exact same Swiss bank routing numbers used by the Geneva syndicate."
Before Julian could answer, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb beside the park path, its tinted windows rolling down smoothly to reveal Marcus Vance sitting in the back seat, holding an encrypted laptop open on his knees.
"I wouldn't try calling Interpol, Captain," Marcus said, his voice completely devoid of the tired public defender persona he had worn in the holding cell. "The Geneva board has already authorized the termination of all pending investigations against you—provided you hand over the flash drive and quietly accept your promotion to Colonel at the Pentagon tomorrow morning."
Evelyn stepped in front of Julian, her hand resting calmly on the service weapon at her side as she looked directly into Marcus's cold, calculating eyes.
"And what happens if I refuse your promotion?" Evelyn asked softly.
May you like
Marcus smiled, closing his laptop with a sharp snap that echoed across the quiet park. "Then the transport vehicle that brought you here from the Anacostia annex will be officially classified as lost at sea along with your entire military record."
