Chapter 15 - The Final Salute

The bronze doors of the Pentagon auditorium gleamed under the midday sun as hundreds of high-ranking military officials, federal dignitaries, and press members gathered for the formal exoneration ceremony. In the center of the stage, dressed in her immaculate white military dress uniform with her father’s restored medals gleaming proudly on her chest, Colonel Evelyn Vance stood at rigid attention. Across the aisle, Julian stood proudly in his black tuxedo, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a silent, unwavering vow of loyalty.

General Whitaker’s empty seat in the front row served as a stark reminder of the corruption that had nearly brought the entire institution down, while Marcus Vance watched quietly from the shadows of the balcony, his hands folded neatly over his lap.

The Chief of Staff of the Army stepped up to the podium, clearing his throat before reading the official presidential proclamation restoring the Vance family honor and formally recognizing Captain Evelyn Vance’s tireless service in dismantling the highest-level logistical corruption ring in modern military history.

When the applause finally died down, Evelyn stepped forward to the microphone. She didn't read the prepared speech resting on the mahogany podium. Instead, she looked out over the sea of faces, her dark eyes steady, clear, and unyielding.

"My father believed that an army without honor is nothing more than a weapon pointed at its own people," Evelyn said, her voice echoing with crystal-clear authority through the cavernous auditorium. "For decades, men and women in uniform have been asked to look the other way, to trade their integrity for institutional survival, and to bury the truth in the dark. Today, that era ends."

She paused, letting her gaze sweep over the balcony where Marcus sat gripping the armrests of his seat in tense silence.

"We did not just recover a ledger or expose a corrupt general," Evelyn continued, her voice ringing with undeniable power. "We proved that no empire—no matter how wealthy, no matter how deeply entrenched, and no matter how far its shadow reaches across the globe—is above the rule of law."

She stepped back from the microphone, offering a sharp, flawless military salute to the flag before turning away from the stage.

As the applause erupted into a thunderous standing ovation, Evelyn walked down the steps of the auditorium into the bright afternoon sunlight where Julian was waiting by the curb. He held open the door of a waiting sedan, offering her a warm, proud smile that finally chased away the ghosts of the past.

Evelyn paused on the threshold of the car, sliding her hand into her pocket to touch the cold metal of the flash drive one last time before dropping it deliberately into a nearby storm drain where the rushing water carried it away into the deep underground currents of the city.

"Where to, Colonel?" Julian asked softly as she climbed into the vehicle.

Evelyn looked out the window at the sprawling horizon of Washington, D.C., a serene, confident smile curving her lips as she adjusted the collar of her uniform.

"Home, Julian," Evelyn replied softly, closing the car door behind her as the vehicle pulled smoothly into the flowing stream of traffic, leaving the past buried forever in the rearview mirror.
