Chapter 9 - Suffocating Shadows

The heavy steel shutters slammed down with a deafening crash, sealing off the penthouse from the outside world and plunging the forty-fifth floor into pitch-black gloom. The emergency klaxon blared a rhythmic, deafening wail that vibrated in everyone's chest.

“Julian!” Martha cried out in the darkness, her frail voice straining over the industrial alarm.

“Stay down, Mom!” Julian shouted back, dropping to his hands and knees to navigate the disoriented space. The oxygen purge system was already hissing faintly, pumping inert gas into the room to starve any potential flames, but it was rapidly suffocating the humans trapped inside.

Lily began to cough softly, waking up in terror from the deafening noise. “Uncle Julian! It’s dark! I can’t breathe!”

Julian fought his way across the carpeted floor toward the sound of the little girl’s voice, his hands sweeping across the furniture until he felt the soft fabric of her pink dress. He scooped her up instantly, pressing her face against his chest and pulling his wool coat over her mouth to filter out the thinning air.

Across the room, Beatrice’s manic laughter echoed like a ghost in a tomb. “We all burn together, family! No survivors! No inheritance!”

Julian knew he had only seconds before unconsciousness took them all. He dragged Martha and Lily toward the heavy mahogany executive desk where the manual override crank for the fire shutters was historically housed. His fingers clawed frantically along the carved wood panels until he felt the hidden release latch. With a sudden, explosive heave of his entire body weight, he wrenched the manual lever downward.

With a metallic screech of tearing gears, the eastern steel shutter buckled, jamming halfway and allowing a thin, life-saving shaft of cool midnight air and city neon to flood into the suffocating room.

Martha gasped hungrily, dragging deep breaths of fresh air into her lungs, while Lily clung tightly to her white stuffed bunny, trembling violently.

Julian didn't hesitate. He turned toward the shadows where Beatrice’s frantic movements could still be heard.
