Chapter 10 - The Confession Tape

The thin shaft of neon light cutting across the ruined penthouse revealed Beatrice stumbling toward the private balcony exit, her arms loaded with heavy canvas bags stuffed to the brim with bearer bonds. Her breath came in ragged, panicked gasps as she realized the manual override had failed to trap them permanently.

“You’re not walking out of here, Beatrice,” Julian said, stepping out of the shadows and blocking the glass sliding door. He held up his phone, the screen glowing brightly. “Every word you just screamed about the fire in Maine, the embezzlement, and the oxygen purge has been livestreamed directly to the federal cybercrime division’s active server.”

Beatrice froze, dropping one of the heavy canvas bags to the floor. The bonds spilled out, scattering across the polished concrete like dead leaves. She stared at the glowing phone screen, her face twisting into an expression of utter, absolute defeat. The illusion of control was completely gone.

“You tricked me,” Beatrice whispered, her voice cracking as real tears finally spilled down her cheeks—not tears of sorrow, but of pure, unadulterated rage. “You set a trap.”

“You walked right into it,” Julian replied coldly, stepping closer as the sound of approaching police sirens wailed loudly from the street far below, echoing up the concrete canyons of the financial district.

Behind them, Martha stood up slowly with the help of Lily, walking steadily toward Beatrice. The elderly woman looked at her former sister-in-law not with hatred, but with a profound, sorrowful weight.

“You destroyed a family for paper, Beatrice,” Martha said softly, her voice carrying an authority that commanded the entire room. “You took my home, you took my husband’s life, and you tried to steal my grandson’s future. But truth has a way of outliving concrete and steel.”

Before Beatrice could lunge forward or speak another word, the heavy glass doors at the private elevator foyer were blown inward with a sharp crash. Federal marshals and local police flooded into the suite, their flashlights cutting blinding arcs through the smoky air.

“Beatrice Vance! Put your hands behind your back!” an officer commanded, stepping forward with handcuffs ready.

As the cold steel cuffs clicked tightly around Beatrice’s wrists and she was hauled away into the darkness of the elevator, Julian finally exhaled a breath he felt like he’d been holding for twenty years.
