Chapter 8 - The Decanter’s Weight

The acrid smell of cigar smoke hung heavy in the ruined executive suite. Beatrice turned slowly to face them, her expensive dark navy blazer gone, replaced by a simple black silk blouse that was stained with sweat and soot. Her hair fell wildly around her face, completely shattering the immaculate corporate facade she had maintained for decades.

“You’re too late, Julian,” Beatrice laughed softly, her voice dangerously high-pitched and erratic. She raised the heavy crystal decanter, gesturing vaguely toward the massive, open steel vault behind her. The interior shelves were completely empty, stripped of every bearer bond, stock certificate, and gold bullion bar that secured the company’s liquidity.

Julian stepped out of the freight elevator, gently setting a still-sleeping Lily down onto a plush sofa near the entrance, ensuring Martha was safely seated beside her. He stepped forward into the room, his eyes locked onto Beatrice with cold, unyielding fury.

“You just signed your own death warrant, Beatrice,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Those bonds are serialized and registered with the federal reserve. You can’t cash them. You can’t launder them. The moment you cross state lines with them, the automated tracking chips will detonate your entire offshore network.”

Beatrice took a slow sip of the amber liquid from the decanter, her eyes wide and manic. “Who said anything about crossing state lines? I don’t need the money anymore, Julian. I just need to watch everything you and your precious little family built burn to the ground, exactly like the house in Maine.”

Without warning, Beatrice lunged toward the corner of the room, slamming her palm down onto a heavy red emergency lever mounted into the wood paneling—a legacy safety mechanism designed to purge the entire floor’s oxygen supply in the event of a catastrophic chemical fire.

A loud, piercing klaxon alarm began to wail overhead, and heavy steel fire shutters dropped rapidly over every glass wall and window in the penthouse, plunging the room into absolute, suffocating darkness.
