Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Ink

The yellowed parchment of the original will crackled softly in the damp air of the carriage house as Julian read the final paragraphs aloud. His voice echoed off the cold stone walls, heavy with a grief that had been frozen in time for twenty years.
According to the legal document signed the very afternoon before the mysterious mansion fire, Arthur Vance—Julian’s biological father, who had been officially declared dead in the blaze—had left absolute control of Vance Global, along with every penny of the family trust, not to his ambitious sister-in-law Beatrice, but to Martha and her unborn child. Beatrice had been systematically written out of the empire for financial misconduct even then.
“She knew,” Martha whispered, her frail hands gripping her wooden cane so hard her knuckles turned stark white. Tears welled in her aged eyes, spilling down her wrinkled cheeks without a sound. “The fire wasn't an accident, Julian. Beatrice tampered with the gas lines in the main house just hours after this document was signed. She thought she had destroyed every copy in existence.”
Lily stepped closer, resting her small hand against Martha’s trembling knee. “Grandma, don’t cry. We found the truth now. The bad lady can’t hurt you anymore.”
Julian looked down at the little girl, a profound wave of protectiveness washing over him. He folded the parchment carefully and slipped it back into the leather portfolio, sliding it into the waterproof interior pocket of his heavy wool coat.
“She’s going to federal prison for the rest of her natural life,” Julian said, his voice flat, resolute, and devoid of any mercy. “The murder statute for arson resulting in loss of life has no time limit in this state. I’m calling the district attorney right now.”
Julian pulled his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, but before he could press the speed-dial button, the tiny screen flashed red. An automated security alert from the penthouse downtown blinked insistently across the display.
SECURITY BREACH: MASTER VAULT ACCESSED. IP ADDRESS: UNKNOWN.
Julian froze. “That’s impossible,” he muttered, his fingers flying across the keypad. “The master vault in the penthouse can only be opened with my biometric authorization or…” He stopped, his breath catching in his throat. “…or Beatrice’s emergency override code, which she shouldn't have had access to after her clearance was revoked.”

Martha gasped, leaning heavily against the stone wall for support. “Arthur… she didn't just target the company, Julian. The vault in the penthouse holds the original bearer bonds—the ones that fund the entire pension trust for every retired worker in our manufacturing division. If she cleans those out, the company goes into immediate bankruptcy by morning.”
