Chapter 13 - The Governor’s Shadow

The black SUV sped through the rainy night streets toward the state capitol building in Albany, the windshield wipers slapping frantically against the glass. Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was thick with a new, terrifying dread. Julian sat in the front passenger seat, his eyes glued to a decrypted digital copy of Marcus’s final phone ping, while Arthur drove with steady, grim determination. In the back, Martha held a sleeping Lily close, her face etched with hard-earned wisdom and ancient sorrow.

“The governor’s office scheduled an emergency press conference for six o’clock tomorrow morning,” Julian said, his voice tense as he scrolled through a series of encrypted government documents on his tablet. “The official agenda is a routine infrastructure bill, but look at the attendee list: every single board member from Vance Global who voted to approve Beatrice’s emergency loans last year is scheduled to be on the podium.”

Arthur gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles whitening as he navigated a sharp turn around the statehouse plaza. “They’re trying to consolidate power before the federal marshals can connect Beatrice’s arrest to the political slush fund. If those politicians get control of the foundation assets, they can legally seize our entire corporate portfolio under ‘state emergency protocols’.”

“Not if we reach the state archives first,” Julian countered firmly, tapping the screen. “Marcus said the true ledger—the one detailing every bribe Beatrice paid out using stolen company funds—is locked inside the historical depository vault beneath the capitol rotunda. It has a physical lock that requires the original Vance family seal.”

Julian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the heavy brass key ring they had recovered from the Maine estate, selecting a small, ornate key with a jagged, asymmetrical tip.

Within twenty minutes, the SUV slid quietly into the underground loading bay of the state capitol building. The cavernous parking level was eerily deserted, save for a single black sedan parked near the service elevators bearing official state government plates.

“Someone is already here,” Arthur whispered, killing the engine and cutting the headlights.

Julian unbuckled his seatbelt, reaching silently into his glove compartment to retrieve a heavy steel flashlight. “Stay here with Mom and Lily, Arthur. If I’m not back in twenty minutes, take them to the federal marshal’s safehouse across town.”

“Like hell I’m staying behind,” Arthur growled, opening his door and stepping out into the cold, damp concrete garage. “That’s my family’s name they’re dragging through the mud.”
