Chapter 9 - The Figure in the Backseat

The warm autumn sunlight washed over the granite steps of the First National Bank, illuminating the flashing blue and red lights of federal vehicles parked haphazardly along the avenue. A crowd of onlookers and journalists had gathered behind yellow police tape, cameras flashing like summer lightning.
Clara shielded her eyes against the glare, her hand firmly gripping the ruined smartphone in her cardigan pocket. Beside her, Tariq stood tall, his hands resting easily in the pockets of his dark hoodie as the federal marshals cleared a path through the media frenzy.
As they reached the sidewalk, the rear door of the idling black town car swung open smoothly. A woman in a sharp navy blue trench coat stepped out, her silver-streaked hair pulled back in a neat bun that mirrored Clara's own hairstyle. She held a leather portfolio stamped with the seal of the United States Department of Justice.
"Mrs. Vance. Mr. Al-Hassan," the woman said, her voice crisp, professional, yet carrying an underlying warmth. "I am Special Prosecutor Eleanor Vance. And no, we are not related, though I've spent the last three years tracking the exact financial network your husband exposed."
Clara stopped in her tracks, staring at the prosecutor in stunned disbelief. "You knew Thomas?"
Eleanor Vance nodded slowly, her expression softening as she looked at the elderly woman. "Thomas reached out to my division six months ago. He knew the local authorities were compromised by Sterling's payroll. He told me that if anything ever happened to him, his wife would bring the final piece of the puzzle."
Tariq stepped forward, crossing his arms over his chest. "Well, she brought it. The archive upload completed just before Sterling tried to wipe the server."
Eleanor opened her leather portfolio, pulling out a sealed manila folder and handing it directly to Clara. "Marcus Sterling is in federal custody right now, along with three members of the municipal board. But there's a complication regarding the physical evidence Thomas left behind in Safe Deposit Box 412."
Clara opened the folder with trembling fingers, her eyes scanning the official documentation. Inside was a legal deed bearing her late husband's signature, dated just three days before his passing.
"What is this?" Clara whispered, her breath catching in her throat as she read the property assignment clause.
"Your husband didn't just store documents in that vault, Mrs. Vance," Eleanor said quietly, her eyes shifting toward the towering bank building behind them. "He purchased the entire subterranean archive level under a blind trust. And the physical key you're holding doesn't just open a box—it locks down the master server room permanently, giving you sole legal ownership of every digital record Marcus Sterling tried to destroy."
Before Clara could process the staggering weight of the revelation, a sudden shout rang out from the bank entrance behind them. A junior bank executive broke through the police perimeter, sprinting toward the town car with a panicked expression, holding a flashing tablet in his hand.

"Prosecutor Vance! You need to look at the primary server logs right now!" the young man shouted, breathing heavily as he reached the vehicle. "The master server room isn't shutting down—it's actively broadcasting a live emergency signal to an unregistered offshore address in Zurich!"
