Chapter 12 - The Safehouse in the Woods

The black town car sped through the dense pine forests north of the city, the asphalt turning from smooth highway to rough gravel as they climbed deeper into the rolling hills. The afternoon sun dipped below the jagged tree line, casting long, bruised twilight shadows across the winding road.
Clara sat in the back seat between Tariq and Eleanor Vance, her fingers nervously tracing the outline of the micro-SD card hidden inside her cardigan lining. The hum of the engine was the only sound in the car, broken occasionally by the static crackle of Eleanor's secure radio as federal dispatch units coordinated roadblocks along the interstate.
"We're ten minutes out from Safehouse Delta," Eleanor announced, her eyes flicking continuously to the rearview mirror. "It's an off-the-grid cabin maintained by the Justice Department. No cellular repeaters, no digital footprints. Whatever we do inside must be done completely offline."
Tariq nodded, leaning his head back against the leather headrest with a quiet sigh. The cut on his jaw was bruising into a deep purple, a stark reminder of how violently their simple errand had escalated. He looked over at Clara, whose face was illuminated by the faint dashboard light.
"You've been remarkably brave through all of this, Mrs. Vance," Tariq said softly, his voice full of genuine admiration.
Clara offered a faint, weary smile. "Thomas and I spent forty years building a quiet life together, Tariq. When he discovered what those men were doing to the city's pension funds, they tried to make him feel small and helpless. I refuse to let them write the final chapter of his life as a tragedy."
The car slowed down, turning sharply down an overgrown dirt track half-hidden by low-hanging pine branches. At the end of the clearing sat a modest, single-story timber cabin with heavy iron shutters drawn tight over every window. A faint wisp of woodsmoke curled lazily from the stone chimney.
Eleanor killed the engine, and the car rolled silently to a stop beside the front porch. She drew her service weapon, checking the magazine before pushing her door open. "Stay in the vehicle until I clear the perimeter."
She stepped out into the crisp evening air, her boots crunching on the gravel as she circled the cabin, flashlight beam cutting through the gathering dusk. After a tense, silent minute, she tapped twice on the passenger window, signaling that it was clear.
Clara and Tariq stepped out of the town car, stepping up onto the wooden porch. As Eleanor unlocked the heavy oak front door, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the base of the porch steps beneath Tariq's boot.
Tariq froze instantly, lifting his foot a fraction of an inch to reveal a small, commercial-grade pressure switch wired into the wooden decking. A tiny red LED light beneath the floorboards began to blink with a rapid, rhythmic pulse.
"Don't move," Tariq whispered, his voice dangerously low. "It's not a standard landmine. It's a localized EMP relay trigger. If I lift my foot or step off, it will discharge a localized magnetic pulse that will wipe every digital storage device within twenty feet."

Eleanor whipped around, her eyes widening in horror as she stared at the blinking red light. "The micro-SD card in your pocket, Clara—if that pulse goes off, the encryption key is gone forever."
