Chapter 8 - The Final Second

The alarm shrieked through the circular vault, a piercing, metallic wail that vibrated in Clara's chest. The countdown timer on the screen shifted to a rapid flash: 00:09... 00:08... 00:07...

"Now!" Tariq yelled, his hands slamming onto the keyboard to execute a local defense script while Clara gripped the ethernet cable plugged into the cracked smartphone.

The file-transfer progress bar hit 98%. The red warning text on the monitor flashed faster: WIPE PROTOCOL AT 50%...

Clara pulled the ethernet cable free from the phone with a sharp snap, her heart leaping into her throat. The screen on the computer terminal froze instantly. For three agonizing seconds, absolute silence descended upon the vault, save for the rhythmic dripping of water in the distant drainage pipe.

Then, a green dialogue box popped up on the central monitor: UPLOAD COMPLETE. 98% OF SECURE ARCHIVE TRANSFERRED TO FEDERAL PROSECUTOR OVERSIGHT PORTAL.

Tariq let out a ragged breath, slumping against the steel pedestal with his eyes closed. Clara clutched the broken phone to her chest, her knees shaking as the adrenaline began to fade, leaving a profound, bone-deep exhaustion in its wake.

Before either of them could draw a full breath, the heavy steel vault door gave a sharp, mechanical click. The automated pneumatic bolts retracted one by one, and the heavy door swung outward, pushed open by a pair of armed federal marshals in tactical gear, their rifles lowered as their badge lights flashed in the dim light.

"Clara Vance? Tariq Al-Hassan?" asked the lead marshal, stepping into the vault with a tablet in his hand displaying the exact timestamp of the incoming federal data packet. "We just received the complete financial audit from Thomas Vance's secure archive. Marcus Sterling's office has been surrounded by federal agents upstairs."

Clara closed her eyes, a single tear escaping down her weathered cheek, not of sorrow, but of overwhelming release. Thomas's voice had finally been heard.

As the marshals escorted them out of the vault and up the grand marble staircase toward the sunlit lobby of the bank, Tariq looked down at the cracked smartphone in Clara's hands. The screen was still shattered, a spiderweb of black glass hiding the display beneath.

"I guess I still owe you a phone repair," Tariq said softly with a faint, tired smile.

Clara smiled back, nodding as they stepped through the glass doors of the bank into the bright afternoon sunlight. But as they reached the sidewalk, a sleek black town car idled at the curb, and the rear door swung open to reveal an unexpected figure waiting inside for them.
