Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Vault

The bell above the shop door jingled softly, but neither Clara nor Tariq noticed as the chill of the autumn wind swept inside. Tariq leaned over the counter, his hands gripping the laminated wood so tightly his knuckles turned completely white. His breathing grew shallow, the gentle demeanor he had worn moments before vanishing into an intense, focused alertness.

"Where did you get that key, Mrs. Vance?" Tariq asked, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that commanded immediate attention. "My father worked security at First National for thirty years before he died under suspicious circumstances. That exact insignia—the crowned lion with a broken sword—was his lifelong obsession. He swore someone inside the bank was hiding stolen corporate archives in one of those private boxes."

Clara clutched the cracked smartphone tighter against her floral dress, stepping back until her spine hit the shelves behind her. The metal display racks rattled under her weight, sending a cascade of loose charging cables tumbling onto the dusty floor.

"I found it in Thomas's old leather briefcase after the funeral," Clara stammered, her voice trembling not just from grief, but from a sudden, paralyzing fear. "He told me never to look inside the lining, but the stitching came loose when he dropped it last year. Thomas wasn't just a retired accountant, Tariq. For the last decade of his life, he was auditing private accounts for the bank's executive board. He discovered massive financial irregularities that reached the highest levels of city government."

Tariq shook his head slowly, processing the dangerous gravity of her words. He walked around the counter, stepping closer to her with an expression of mingled disbelief and grim realization.

"That phone isn't just broken because you dropped it on the sidewalk," Tariq said, pointing a finger at the spiderweb screen. "Look at the impact point. It wasn't a flat drop. Someone tried to crush it remotely using an electronic frequency jammer while it was in your purse. They knew you were walking near the bank today."

Before Clara could answer, a sharp tapping echoed from the storefront window facing the street. Both of them turned their heads sharply toward the glass. Outside, parked at the curb, was a sleek black sedan with tinted windows. The passenger-side window rolled down a fraction of an inch, revealing the cold, metallic glint of a high-resolution camera lens pointed directly at them through the glass.

Tariq reacted instantly, grabbing Clara by the arm and pulling her behind the tall service counter out of the camera's direct line of sight.

"They're watching us right now," Tariq whispered urgently, his hand hovering over the master power switch for the shop's security cameras. "And if they know you have that key, your life is in immediate danger."

Clara's hand shook as she reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out the small brass key, holding it up in the dim light. As the headlights of the black sedan suddenly flashed high beams straight through the shop window, blinding them with harsh white light, a heavy thud echoed from the back door. Someone was trying to pick the deadbolt in the alley.
