Chapter 3 - The Alleyway Escape

The heavy sound of metal scraping against metal echoed from the narrow hallway leading to the back alley. Tariq motioned frantically for Clara to stay low, creeping toward the storeroom with a heavy soldering iron gripped tightly in his right hand. The flickering neon sign outside cast long, distorted shadows across the linoleum floor.

"Stay behind the parts bins," Tariq mouthed silently, his eyes fixed on the rear door. The brass knob began to turn, slowly, with agonizing precision. The lock clicked, and the heavy wooden door creaked open an inch, letting in a gust of damp evening air.

Tariq lunged forward, slamming his shoulder against the door just as a gloved hand pushed through the opening. A muffled grunt of surprise came from the darkness outside, followed by the sound of heavy boots scrambling backward down the exterior metal staircase. Tariq threw the deadbolt, locking it securely, and bolted the secondary slide latch into place. He turned back to Clara, who was leaning against a shelf of spare circuit boards, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

"We can't stay here," Tariq said, his voice urgent as he grabbed his dark hoodie from a wall hook and pulled it over his head. "They know this location. Within five minutes, they’ll have the front covered too."

Clara nodded, clutching her broken phone and the brass key inside her pocket. She felt ancient, fragile, and utterly overwhelmed by the sudden violent shift in her quiet life. But beneath her terror, a fierce spark of defiance burned. Thomas had died trying to bring the truth to light, and she refused to let his sacrifice be buried in silence.

"The subway station two blocks over," Clara said, her voice steadying. "There's an underground maintenance tunnel Thomas showed me years ago when he worked on the city transit committee. It leads directly beneath the First National Bank downtown."

Tariq looked at her with newfound respect. Without another word, he disabled the shop’s front alarm, turned off the lights, and led Clara through a concealed side exit that opened into a labyrinth of narrow brick-walled alleys.

The cold autumn wind whipped around the brick corners as they hurried through the shadows, keeping their heads down to avoid the streetlights. Every sound—a stray cat knocking over a trash can, the distant siren of an ambulance, the hum of an overhead power line—made them flinch. They reached the subway entrance just as a commuter train rumbled underground, shaking the pavement beneath their feet.

Tariq pulled open a heavy, rusted maintenance door marked with a faded yellow warning sign, ushering Clara inside into the damp, echoing darkness.

As the heavy metal door slammed shut behind them, plunging the stairwell into absolute blackness, a flashlight beam suddenly cut through the gloom from the bottom of the stairs, illuminating their boots. A low, cold voice echoed up from the tunnel floor, blocking their only escape route.
