Chapter 4 - Voices in the Dark

The beam of the flashlight swept upward, blinding Clara and Tariq with a harsh, glaring white light that bounced off the damp concrete walls of the underground stairwell. Clara shielded her eyes with a trembling hand, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"Step back up toward the street," commanded the voice from the shadows. It was smooth, devoid of emotion, carrying the crisp authority of someone accustomed to absolute obedience.
Tariq instinctively pushed Clara slightly behind him, gripping the heavy metal railing of the stairwell. His eyes adjusted slowly to the glare, picking out the silhouette of a tall man dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in the grimy transit tunnel. The man held a small, black device in his left hand—a signal jammer humming with a faint, high-pitched frequency.
"We aren't going anywhere with you," Tariq said, his voice echoing loudly in the enclosed space. "I know who you're working for. The board members at First National have been burying embezzlement files for a decade, and we have the key to prove it."
The man in the suit chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound that sent a chill down Clara's spine. He took two slow steps upward, the polished leather of his shoes clicking against the concrete steps.
"My dear boy," the man replied, his tone dripping with condescension. "You think this is just about corporate embezzlement? Mr. Vance was poking into accounts that funded far more dangerous enterprises than mere bank fraud. That key doesn't just open a safe deposit box. It opens a Pandora's box that will implicate half the federal oversight committee."
Clara stepped out from behind Tariq, her posture straightening despite her age. She looked directly into the blinding light, her voice trembling slightly but carrying a fierce, unyielding resolve.
"Thomas knew the risks," Clara said clearly. "That's why he gave me the phone. That's why he recorded the truth before they silenced him in that hospital room."
The man in the suit stopped instantly. The hum of the signal jammer cut out. For a fraction of a second, his calm composure cracked, revealing a flicker of genuine panic in his eyes.
"He recorded an audio confession before he died?" the man asked, his voice dropping its polished veneer. "Where is it?"
Tariq didn't hesitate. He lunged sideways, grabbing a rusty wall-mounted fire extinguisher from its brackets and smashing it directly into the junction box beside the stairwell. Sparks showered down in a blinding cascade, plunging the entire corridor into pitch blackness.

Amidst the sudden shouting of the suit-clad operative, Tariq grabbed Clara's arm, pulling her through a rusted service hatch marked with a faded red cross, slamming it shut and locking it from the inside as heavy fists pounded furiously against the metal on the other side.
