Chapter 8 - The Intercepted Call

The harsh ring of the landline echoed off the quartz countertops, jarring everyone in the kitchen out of their paralyzed silence. Elena stood frozen with the manila folder clutched in her hands, her knuckles white against the manila paper.
Agent Ross stepped forward, her professional instincts kicking in. "Let it ring, Mrs. Vance, or let me answer it. Given the federal warrant we're executing, any incoming communications might be related to co-conspirators attempting to purge remote servers."
Before Agent Ross could reach the wall-mounted phone, Claire scrambled up from her spot by the pantry, her silk bathrobe flapping around her legs as she lunged toward the receiver with desperate speed.
"Don't touch that!" Agent Ross barked, lunging forward and grabbing Claire by the shoulder, spinning her around and shoving her back against the pantry door with controlled, authoritative force.
Agent Ross lifted the receiver herself, pressing it to her ear. "Federal Securities and Exchange Commission, Special Agent Ross speaking. State your name and business."
A heavy, static-laced pause hung on the line before a deep, calm voice responded from the other end. "This is Director Hayes, Federal Reserve Financial Crimes Division. We're monitoring the asset freeze protocol at the Vance-Meridian residential address. Is Agent Miller still on site?"
"Yes, Director. We have the primary suspect, Marcus Vance, in custody, and we're currently executing a forensic review of the household accounts," Agent Ross reported, her eyes darting over to Elena and Arthur. "What do you have on your end?"
"We just intercepted a massive wire transfer attempt originating from a secondary server linked to the Chicago subsidiary," Director Hayes stated clearly through the receiver. "Four million dollars was just pushed out of a frozen escrow account toward an offshore routing number in Zurich. The authorization override came from a secure terminal inside this specific residence."
The entire room went dead silent. Agent Ross slowly lowered the phone an inch from her ear, her sharp blue eyes sweeping over the inhabitants of the kitchen.
"Inside this residence," Agent Ross repeated slowly, looking directly at Arthur, who was still huddled on the floor by the cabinets, and then at Claire, who was breathing heavily against the pantry door. "Director Hayes, confirm the IP address of the terminal that authorized the transfer."
"It's a hardwired MAC address originating from the home office down the hall," the director replied instantly. "The terminal was logged in under the administrative profile of Arthur Vance."
Elena slowly closed the manila folder containing her father's stolen inheritance. She didn't scream. She didn't cry. She simply walked past Agent Ross, her black button-down shirt crisp and unyielding, and headed down the short hallway toward the glass-double-doored home office.
"Elena, wait," Agent Ross warned, following closely behind with her hand resting on her sidearm. "Don't touch anything on that desk. It's an active crime scene."
Elena ignored her, pushing open the heavy glass door of the office. The room was bathed in the cool blue light of a dual-monitor desktop computer sitting on an expensive mahogany desk. On the main screen, a progress bar was flashing bright green, indicating that the four-million-dollar wire transfer to Zurich was ninety-eight percent complete.
