Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Audit

"I'm sorry, is this a private meeting, or can the actual owners of the parent corporation join the party?"

The voice belonged to a tall, silver-haired woman in a sharp navy blue pantsuit who strode into the foyer with absolute authority. Behind her walked two men in dark suits carrying heavy metal briefcases bearing the seal of a federal regulatory commission.

Marcus froze, his coffee mug hovering halfway to his mouth. The smug, untouchable expression he had worn a second ago vanished, replaced by a sudden, rigid panic.

Elena turned toward the foyer, blinking against the sudden influx of strangers. "Who are you?"

The silver-haired woman stopped just inside the kitchen threshold, her sharp blue eyes sweeping over the group—Elena, Arthur, Claire, Marcus, and young Leo standing bewildered by his suitcase. She pulled a badge from her jacket and held it up.

"Special Agent Catherine Ross, Federal Securities and Exchange Commission," the woman announced, her voice crisp and commanding. "We have a federal warrant to execute a forensic audit of all corporate and personal assets linked to the Vance-Meridian Holdings umbrella."

Arthur gripped the edge of the kitchen counter, his knees finally buckling as he slid down to the floor in a pathetic heap, his light blue shirt catching on a cabinet handle. "No," he groaned, burying his face in his hands. "Not now. It's too early."

"Too early for what, Arthur?" Elena demanded, spinning around to look down at her pathetic excuse of a husband. "What did you do?"

Agent Ross stepped further into the kitchen, ignoring Arthur completely as she walked straight up to Marcus and extended her hand, palm up. "Mr. Marcus Vance, I presume? Hand over your phone, your laptop, and the keys to your downtown office. You're being detained for questioning regarding wire fraud, corporate identity theft, and securities manipulation."

Marcus slowly lowered his coffee mug to the counter, his professional composure completely shattered. He didn't move to comply, instead casting a frantic, desperate glance toward his sister.

Claire backed away, pressing herself flat against the pantry door, her silk bathrobe rustling loudly in the quiet room. "I have nothing to do with this," she stammered, her voice high and panicked. "I'm just a consultant. I didn't sign the federal filings!"

"Actually, Miss Vance, your signature is on the primary shell corporation account registered in the Cayman Islands," Agent Ross said smoothly, nodding to one of the agents behind her, who immediately stepped forward and slapped a pair of shiny silver handcuffs onto Marcus's wrists with a sharp click.

Leo watched in stunned silence, his hand still resting on the handle of his suitcase. He looked at his father crumpled on the floor, then at the federal agents, and finally at his mother.

Elena stood tall in the center of the room, her black button-down shirt unwrinkled, her long dark hair falling straight down her back. The chaos around her was deafening, but inside her chest, a strange, terrifying clarity was beginning to take root. The illusion was dead. The war was just beginning.

Agent Ross turned her attention directly to Elena, her expression softening just a fraction. "Mrs. Vance, we've been tracking this syndicate for fourteen months. Your husband wasn't just a victim; he was a willing participant until they turned the screws on him last month. I'm going to need you to come down to the federal field office to sign a deposition."

Before Elena could answer, Agent Ross's secure radio crackled to life on her lapel, and a dispatcher's voice came through with a piece of news that made every person in the kitchen stop breathing.
