Chapter 10 - The Unannounced Visitor

The red alert light on the encrypted intercom system flashed rhythmically on the mahogany desk, casting an ominous crimson glow across the faces of Elena, Leo, Agent Ross, and Arthur.
Agent Ross leaned over the desk, ignoring the downloaded data drives for a second, and pressed the speaker button. "This is Special Agent Ross, Federal Securities and Exchange Commission. Identify yourself and state your business immediately."
A heavy, measured pause crackled through the speaker before a woman's voice—smooth, sophisticated, and entirely unfamiliar—responded. "Agent Ross, I presume? My name is Victoria Vance. I'm Marcus and Claire's legal counsel, and more importantly, I am the primary majority shareholder of the Meridian Holdings parent trust."
Arthur let out a sharp gasp from the doorway, his legs finally giving out completely as he slid down the wood-paneled wall, sitting flat on the office floor. "Victoria... she's not their lawyer. She's... she's the matriarch."
Agent Ross frowned, hitting the intercom toggle. "Mrs. Vance, you have reached a restricted federal crime scene. Any attempt to interfere with an active asset seizure will result in immediate obstruction charges."
"I am not interfering, Agent; I am conducting a rescue operation," Victoria's voice replied smoothly through the speaker. "My niece and nephew appear to have vastly underestimated the intelligence of Mrs. Elena Vance. I am currently standing outside the front security gate with local law enforcement and a certified court order dissolving all subsidiary shell accounts."
Elena straightened up from behind her son's chair, stepping around the mahogany desk to stand directly beside Agent Ross. She looked at the intercom speaker as if she could stare right through the electronics to the woman on the other end.
"You're welcome to try, Victoria," Elena said, her voice cutting through the speaker with a cold, immaculate clarity. "The house is legally mine. The federal government has the accounts frozen. And your niece and nephew are currently sitting in handcuffs or hiding in my pantry. What makes you think you have any leverage left?"
A soft, refined laugh came through the speaker. "My dear Elena, you still don't understand the scope of the web your husband built. Marcus and Claire are small fish. They were disposable pawns used to test your defenses. I own the underlying debt on this architectural masterpiece you love so much. If you don't open this front gate within the next five minutes, I will foreclose on the mortgage today, and you and your son will be standing on the curb with your suitcases before sunset."
The connection clicked dead.
In the small office, the silence returned, heavier and more suffocating than before. Leo looked up from the desk, his eyes wide with terror. "Mom... the mortgage? I thought Dad paid this house off five years ago."
Arthur didn't answer from the floor; he simply stared at the Persian rug, rocking slightly back and forth.
Agent Ross exhaled slowly, sliding her phone back into her belt holster. "She's bluffing about the immediate foreclosure, Mrs. Vance. A federal asset freeze supersedes private mortgage actions. But she isn't lying about holding the underlying debt."
Elena looked down at her son, then out the glass doors toward the sunlit kitchen where Claire was still huddled by the pantry. She walked out of the office, her black pants swishing softly against the floor, her mind operating with the ruthless precision of a master architect drawing up blueprints for a controlled demolition.
"Let her in," Elena said, stopping at the kitchen island and looking directly at Agent Ross as she followed her out of the hallway.
"Mrs. Vance, are you sure?" Agent Ross asked. "Once Victoria Vance steps onto this property, things get legally complicated very quickly."

"Let her in," Elena repeated, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, brilliant light. "If she wants my house, she can come inside and try to take it from my hands herself."
