Chapter 6 - The Missing Signature

The dispatcher's voice crackled through the static of Agent Ross's lapel radio, small and metallic, yet loud enough to fill the sunlit kitchen. "Agent Ross, we have a priority update from the downtown registry office. The primary asset transfer deed for the residential property—recorded yesterday afternoon—was flagged by the automated title verification system."
Agent Ross paused, her hand hovering near her belt as she waited for the rest of the transmission. "Go ahead. What's the flag?"
"The physical signature belonging to the primary co-owner, Elena Vance, was executed via a digitized power of attorney," the dispatcher reported. "However, our forensics department just ran a biometric verification on the notary seal. It's a fraudulent stamp. The original owner's physical signature was never legally executed."
Marcus, currently standing with his hands cuffed behind his back, let out a sharp, involuntary curse, twisting his head toward his sister with pure venom. "You idiot. I told you we needed her wet ink signature on the physical document. You forged it digitally, didn't you?"
Claire didn't answer. She simply slid down the pantry door until she hit the floor, burying her face in her hands as her carefully constructed life of luxury evaporated in real-time.
Elena stood motionless, absorbing the words like a physical blow. She looked down at Arthur, who was still slumped against the kitchen cabinets, looking like a ghost haunting his own home.
"Arthur," Elena said softly, her voice carrying a terrifying edge that made the federal agents look over with professional interest. "Look at me."
Arthur slowly raised his head, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow. "El... I tried to stop them. They said if I didn't sign the corporate transfer, they would release the audit records from the Chicago firm. They were going to ruin us anyway."
"So you decided to ruin me first," Elena stated, not asking a question, merely stating a mathematical fact. She turned her dark eyes back to Agent Ross. "Agent Ross, did I hear that correctly? The deed transfer on this house is legally void because my signature was forged?"
Agent Ross nodded firmly. "That is correct, Mrs. Vance. As far as federal property law and local title registries are concerned, you remain the sole rightful co-owner of this estate. The fraudulent transfer executed yesterday holds zero legal weight."
Leo let out a long, shaky breath, letting go of his suitcase handle for the first time since he walked into the kitchen. He stepped forward, looking at his mother with a mix of awe and lingering trauma. "Mom... does that mean we don't have to leave?"
"No, Leo," Elena said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute steel as she turned to face Marcus and the two federal agents standing beside him. "It means they have to leave."
Marcus sneer returned, albeit strained and desperate, as the federal agents grabbed his arms to escort him out. "You think you've won something, Elena? The company is bankrupt. The accounts are frozen. Even if you keep this house, you're sitting on a pile of ashes and federal debt that will take ten lifetimes to clear."
"Let the federal government sort out the debt," Elena replied, stepping aside to let the agents haul Marcus past her toward the front foyer. She watched him go without a shred of pity. "My name is on the title, and my hands are clean. Take him out of my sight."

As the heavy oak front door slammed shut behind the federal entourage, leaving only Agent Ross, Arthur on the floor, weeping Claire against the pantry, and young Leo by the door, Agent Ross stepped closer to Elena and handed her a thick manila folder.
