Chapter 14 - The Ringing Phone

The vibration of the cell phone against the white quartz island hummed loudly in the quiet kitchen, the electronic pulse drawing the immediate attention of both Elena and Leo.
Agent Ross stopped by the entryway, her hand hovering near her belt as she turned back to look at the screen. "Is that another call from the Zurich routing servers, Mrs. Vance?"
Elena walked slowly back across the marble floor, her black pants swishing softly against her legs. She picked up the phone, staring at the international country code flashing on the display before swiping the screen to accept the call and pressing it to her ear.
"This is Elena Vance," she said, her voice clear, steady, and devoid of any hesitation.
A heavy, static-laced silence hung on the line for a second before a familiar, calm voice responded. "Elena. It's Marcus's former Swiss associate, Hans Richter. I'm calling from Zurich."
Elena's eyes narrowed. She didn't flinch. "If you're calling to negotiate the release of the frozen escrow funds, Mr. Richter, you are wasting your international minutes. The federal government has seized every digital ledger connected to Meridian Holdings."
"I am not calling on behalf of Marcus or Victoria, Mrs. Vance," Hans Richter replied smoothly, his accent clipped and professional. "I am calling on behalf of the primary European architectural consortium that commissioned the Zurich development project two years ago. We know Arthur Vance was just a figurehead. We have followed your architectural blueprints through every shell corporation, and we know that you were the actual creative force behind the Zurich master design."
Elena stared out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows toward the sunlit courtyard. "Go on."
"The consortium is prepared to bypass Meridian Holdings entirely," Hans stated clearly. "We want to contract directly with you, Elena Vance, under your own independent firm. We are prepared to wire a five-million-dollar retainer into a newly established, unencumbered personal account by end of business today."
Agent Ross, standing a few feet away, raised an eyebrow, listening intently to the one-sided conversation. Leo leaned against the counter, watching his mother with a look of profound, dawning admiration.
Elena took a slow, deep breath, feeling the heavy burden of the past twenty-five years finally lifting off her shoulders. She looked around the bright modern kitchen—the house she had designed, the house she had fought for, the house she had reclaimed from the ashes of her husband's betrayal.
"Mr. Richter," Elena said, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "My legal representation will forward our new corporate banking details within the hour. But understand this: I don't work with subsidiaries, I don't sign blank checks, and I never, ever share design credit with amateurs."
"Understood, Mrs. Vance. We look forward to your terms," Hans replied before the line clicked dead.
Elena lowered the phone slowly, setting it face down on the quartz counter. She looked over at Leo, who offered her a small, tentative, but genuinely proud smile.
"Well, Mom," Leo said softly, running a hand through his hair. "It looks like we're back in business."
"No, Leo," Elena corrected him, stepping forward to wrap her arms around her son in a fierce, protective embrace that anchored them both to the present reality. "We aren't back in business. We are starting an entirely new life."
Agent Ross offered a respectful nod, tipping her head toward the front door as her radio crackled to life with confirmation that Arthur and the co-conspirators were officially booked into federal custody. "Well, Mrs. Vance, it looks like your architectural career is about to expand globally. I'll leave you to your blueprints."
As Agent Ross and her team finally exited the property, closing the heavy oak door behind them once and for all, Elena turned back to the kitchen, walking over to the window where the delicate white flowers sat in the sunlight.

Before she could pick up the vase, a sharp, metallic scratching sound echoed from inside the master walk-in pantry, followed by a frantic voice calling out from the darkness.
