Chapter 9 - The Grand Finale at the Estate

The sleek sports car tore through the wrought-iron gates of the Sterling ancestral estate, the heavy brass locks snapping like twigs as Victoria plowed her vehicle straight up the gravel driveway. The sprawling mansion loomed ahead, its towering gothic pillars and darkened windows looking more like a mausoleum than a home.

Victoria slammed on the brakes, throwing the car into park, and leaped out into the pouring rain. Her ruined wedding dress was soaked through, clinging to her shivering frame, her hair tangled and matted with soot and moisture. She raced up the marble steps of the grand entrance, pounding her fists against the heavy oak doors.

"Open up!" she screamed into the storm. "Open this door right now!"

To her surprise, the heavy oak doors swung inward with a soft, oiled click. The foyer was completely dark, save for a single shaft of moonlight cutting through the stained-glass dome overhead, illuminating the center of the marble floor where a single wooden chair sat waiting.

And tied securely to that chair was Julian.

Victoria rushed inside, slamming the front door behind her, and fell to her knees beside her husband. She frantically tore the tape from his mouth, gasping for breath.

"Julian! Julian, are you alright?" she cried, her hands trembling as she checked his bonds.

Julian spat out a mouthful of bitter saliva, his hazel eyes wide with a mixture of terror and bitter resentment. He didn't look at her with love; he looked at her like she was the anchor dragging him down into the abyss.

"You did this," Julian whispered hoarsely, his voice raw from the smoke and screaming. "Your family, your lies, your greed... it’s all crashing down, Victoria, and you dragged me right into the crater with you."

"I didn't do anything wrong," Victoria protested defensively, though the words sounded hollow even to her own ears.

"You stole from the wrong people," a calm, collected voice echoed from the grand staircase above.

Victoria snapped her head up. Descending the marble steps with slow, measured elegance was Clara. She had changed out of her hotel manager's blazer into an expensive, charcoal-grey trench coat, her dark hair still pulled back into that immaculate low bun. Behind her stood the two heavy-set associates, carrying a pair of heavy metal briefcases.

"Clara," Victoria snarled, rising slowly to her feet, her eyes darting frantically toward the dark corners of the room for any hidden weapon. "This has gone far enough. The police will be here any minute. I tripped the silent alarm the moment I walked through these doors."

Clara paused halfway down the stairs, a faint, confident smile touching her lips. She raised her left hand, holding a small smartphone directly toward Victoria, and tapped the screen once.

From the front pocket of Victoria’s wet jacket, a small electronic chime rang out.
