Chapter 13 - The Visitor in the Shadows

The heavy steel door of the interrogation room closed with a soft, final latch. Victoria raised her head, expecting to see another federal prosecutor or perhaps a public defender assigned to her hopeless case. Instead, stepping out from the shadows near the one-way mirror was Clara.
She was no longer wearing her hotel manager’s blazer, nor the trench coat from the harbor. She wore a simple, elegant black suit, her dark hair pinned back into that same neat low bun, her expression an unreadable mask of absolute calm.
Special Agent Miller stood up immediately, nodding respectfully to Clara before gathering his files and heading toward the door.
"Take your time, Ms. Pendelton," Miller said quietly as he stepped out into the hallway, pulling the heavy steel door shut behind him.
Victoria stared at Clara in stunned disbelief, the handcuffs rattling against the metal table as she tried to process the impossible hierarchy unfolding before her eyes.
"You," Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with a dangerous mix of fear and hatred. "You're not a hotel manager. You never were."
"I am whatever the situation requires me to be, Victoria," Clara replied calmly, pulling out the metal chair opposite the bride and sitting down with deliberate grace. She placed a small, leather-bound notebook on the table between them.
"What do you want?" Victoria demanded, leaning forward as far as the handcuffs would allow. "You took the money. You took the estate. You destroyed my marriage and put me in a federal holding cell. Isn't that enough?"
"Money is just paper, Victoria. Estates are just concrete and wood," Clara said softly, her dark eyes locking onto Victoria's with piercing intensity. "What I wanted was the truth. And now, I have the confession."
"I haven't confessed to anything," Victoria spat out defensively.
"You just admitted that Arthur Pendelton is alive," Clara replied, a faint, razor-sharp smile touching her lips. "And on a federal wire recording, no less. Agent Miller’s audio feed captured every word. The conspiracy charge is officially locked in."
Victoria’s face drained of what little color remained in her cheeks. She had walked right into the trap, step by calculated step, believing she was the hunter when she had been the prey all along.
"Where is he?" Victoria whispered, her voice cracking. "Where is your father?"
"Right where your father left him three years ago—safe, vindicated, and watching your family’s legacy turn to ash," Clara said, standing up slowly from the chair. She reached down, picked up her leather notebook, and turned toward the door.
"You can't keep me here forever," Victoria called out desperately, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "I'll find a way out. I always do."
Clara paused with her hand on the doorknob, turning her head just enough to look back over her shoulder.
"There is no way out of a maze you built yourself, Victoria," Clara said quietly. "Enjoy your honeymoon."

The door clicked shut, leaving Victoria alone in the grey light of the interrogation room, listening to the distant hum of the facility's ventilation system as the final chapter of her life as an untouchable elite came to a cold, definitive close.
