Chapter 8 - The Ringing Phone

The crackle of burning paper filled the hollow silence of the warehouse as the fire began to consume the outer edges of the Sterling family documents. The smoke was thickening rapidly, stinging Victoria’s eyes and catching in her throat as she coughed, frantically searching the floor for her discarded bag and the revolver she had dropped earlier.
Her fingers brushed against the leather clutch in the haze, but before she could retrieve her weapon, the sharp, electronic chime of the phone left on the wooden crate cut through the roar of the flames.
Victoria froze. She looked at the phone, its bright screen flashing against the dark, soot-stained timber of the crate. She hesitated, her instincts screaming that answering it was a trap, but curiosity and sheer desperation forced her feet to move.
She crossed the concrete floor, ignoring the burning heat radiating from the bonfire, and snatched the device off the wood. She pressed accept and brought it to her ear.
"I know you're still there, Victoria," Clara’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and clear, devoid of any background noise except for the hum of a moving vehicle.
"Where are you taking him?" Victoria demanded, coughing as a thick gust of smoke blew across her face.
"Julian is going to a very comfortable, very secure location where he will finally learn the true value of honesty," Clara replied smoothly. "And you are going to walk out the front door of this warehouse, get into your sports car, and drive to the address currently blinking on your phone screen."
A new GPS coordinate popped up on Victoria’s screen, accompanied by a digital countdown timer set to fifteen minutes.
"And if I refuse?" Victoria challenged, her voice trembling with rage and exhaustion.
"If you refuse, the authorities will receive an anonymous packet containing the hard drive from your father’s safe, detailing every bribe, every forced foreclosure, and every illegal offshore account your family used to build their legacy. You won't just lose your money, Victoria. You’ll spend the next twenty years wearing an orange jumpsuit in a maximum-security penitentiary."
The threat was delivered with such matter-of-fact certainty that Victoria knew it wasn't a bluff. Clara held all the cards, and the deck had been stacked years before they ever met.
"What do you want from me?" Victoria asked, the last remnants of her aristocratic pride finally crumbling into ash.
"I want what my father built, returned to its rightful owner," Clara said softly. "And then, I want you to experience what it feels like to have everything you love stripped away until there is nothing left but your own reflection in a broken mirror. See you in fifteen minutes, Victoria. Don't be late."
The line went dead.
Victoria stared at the screen as the countdown timer ticked down fourteen minutes and fifty seconds. She threw the phone into the nearest burning pile of paper, turned on her heel, and sprinted toward the main exit. She pushed the heavy iron doors open, gulping in the cold, clean harbor air, and ran toward her car.

The engine roared to life as she slammed her foot on the accelerator, tearing away from the burning warehouse and plunging back into the rainy labyrinth of the city, unaware that a second vehicle was tailing her every move from the shadows.
