Chapter 10 - The Master Key

Victoria’s hand darted into her pocket, pulling out a small, unassuming black device that she had never seen before in her life. It pulsed with a faint blue light, transmitting a steady signal directly to the phone in Clara’s hand.
"What is this?" Victoria demanded, her voice rising in panic as she stared at the pulsing light.
"A tracker, a recorder, and a digital keylogger all in one," Clara replied smoothly, continuing her descent down the grand staircase until she stood just a few feet away from the bride. "It was slipped into your evening bag while you were shouting at the front desk of the hotel this morning. Every phone call you made, every panicked threat you whispered to your husband, and every illegal account number you accessed over the last six hours has been automatically uploaded to federal servers."
Victoria took an involuntary step back, the blood rushing in her ears like a roaring freight train. "You can't do this. I have rights! I have lawyers!"
"Your lawyers resigned twenty minutes ago," Clara said, her tone as calm and unyielding as a slab of granite. "When the tax division saw the paper trail of the Pendelton estate being systematically dismantled and funneled into your father’s private offshore accounts, they didn't hesitate to issue federal warrants. The Sterling empire is officially bankrupt, liquidated, and seized by the state."
Julian let out a hollow, broken laugh from the chair, his head dropping forward against his chest in absolute defeat. "It’s over, Victoria. We're ruined."
"Shut up!" Victoria screamed, turning on her husband with venomous fury. "You sold me out! The moment things got difficult, you traded my name for a passport!"
"I traded your name because your name is a curse!" Julian shouted back, his voice cracking with long-suppressed rage. "I spent three years pretending to love a woman who cares about nothing except power and appearance! You didn't marry me, Victoria. You bought an accessory to match your ballroom!"
Clara watched the domestic collapse with detached clinical interest. She signaled to the two men standing behind her, who stepped forward and effortlessly lifted Julian—chair and all—carrying him toward the side exit leading to the garage.
"Where are you taking him?" Victoria demanded, lunging forward, but the scarred bouncer stepped into her path, blocking her with a wall of solid muscle.
"He’s going to a debriefing with the district attorney," Clara explained calmly. "He’s cooperating fully in exchange for witness protection and a clean slate. You, on the other hand, have a much more exclusive appointment."
Heavy footsteps echoed from the front doorway behind them. Victoria whipped around, her eyes widening in horror as two federal marshals in dark tactical vests stepped into the foyer, their badges gleaming under the moonlight streaming through the glass dome.

"Victoria Sterling?" the lead marshal called out, his voice flat and official. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, tax evasion, and the conspiracy to obstruct justice. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
