Chapter 1 - The First Crack in the Glass

The marble floors of the grand hotel lobby echoed with the quiet tension of a disaster unfolding in slow motion. Victoria stood at the front desk, her white lace wedding gown pooling around her satin heels like foam against a cliff. Her blonde hair, styled in an immaculate updo, caught the amber glow of the chandeliers, though her face remained drained of warmth. Behind her, the bridesmaids in their soft pink dresses shifted nervously, whispering among themselves as they watched the confrontation play out.

Across the mahogany counter stood Clara, the twenty-six-year-old hotel manager, her dark hair pulled back into a severe low bun that matched her immaculate black blazer. Clara’s expression was an exercise in absolute neutrality, a mask worn by someone who had seen every iteration of human arrogance and survived to tell the tale.

Victoria leaned over the desk, her voice dropping to a dangerously sharp whisper that cut through the ambient jazz drifting from the lounge.

"You think you can play games with me, Clara? I know what you did."

Clara did not flinch. She simply tilted her head, her brown eyes steady and unblinking.

"I have no idea what you are referring to, Mrs. Sterling. The bridal suite is prepared, and your guests are waiting."

"Don't play innocent," Victoria hissed, her fingers tightening into white-knuckled fists against the polished wood. "You intercepted that delivery. You thought you could be clever, didn't you? But you are just hired help."

Clara exhaled a slow, controlled breath, letting a microscopic smile touch the corners of her lips before she replied.

"This wedding is for people who matter. I understand. Congratulations, Victoria."

Victoria recoiled slightly, the insult landing with the force of a physical blow because it used her own weapon against her. She spun on her heel, her expression freezing into a mask of cold, ruthless determination as she marched back toward the grand ballroom. The bridesmaids parted like terrified sheep, rushing to keep pace with their terrifying leader.

Inside the ballroom, the string quartet played a melancholic Vivaldi piece that felt entirely wrong for a celebration. Julian, thirty years old and trapped in a suffocating custom tuxedo, stood beside a massive display table laden with crystal gift boxes and silver ribbons. He looked up anxiously as Victoria approached, his eyes darting to her flushed cheeks.

"Is everything ready?" Julian asked, his voice trembling slightly.

May you like

Victoria did not answer him immediately. Instead, she reached for the largest white gift box on the table, her hands steady as she picked up an ivory envelope resting on top. She tore the seal open, pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment, and began to read. Within seconds, her breath hitched, her pupils dilated with absolute horror, and the paper slipped from her nerveless fingers, fluttering down to the floor to reveal a single line of handwriting that changed everything.
