Chapter 8 - The Hospital Bedside

The sterile scent of antiseptic and bleach hung heavy in the ICU waiting room, but Clara didn't wait for permission. She pushed past a pair of uniformed guards stationed outside Room 402, her heavy white wedding dress rustling loudly against the linoleum floor.

Julian lay in the center of the adjustable hospital bed, looking pale and fragile against the crisp white pillows. A clear plastic oxygen cannula rested beneath his nose, and a heart monitor beeped in a slow, steady rhythm that echoed off the tile walls.

"You shouldn't be here, Clara," a cold voice spoke from the corner of the dim room.

Eleanor Vance stood beside the window, her navy blue dress cast in shadows, her expression devoid of any maternal grief. She looked like a general surveying a battlefield after a tactical retreat.

"He's my husband—or he was, until your lawyers forced an annulment," Clara snapped, walking right up to the side of the bed and looking down at Julian’s closed eyes. "Did you push him to this, Eleanor? Was the fifty-million-dollar disappearance too much even for your golden boy to stomach?"

Eleanor didn't flinch. She stepped out of the shadows, her heels clicking softly against the floor. "Julian didn't swallow those pills because of the money, Clara. He swallowed them because he finally read the letter his father left behind before he died."

Clara paused, her breath catching in her throat. "What letter?"

"The one detailing how my late husband built this entire empire on stolen capital—and how Julian was intended to take the fall the moment the federal investigation closed in," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper. "You weren't the target, my dear. You were the designated scapegoat. But Julian figured out that I was the one who altered the files to frame you, and the guilt simply broke him."

Before Clara could process the confession, Julian’s eyelids fluttered open. His gaze drifted slowly across the ceiling before focusing on Clara standing beside his bed. A weak, trembling hand lifted slightly from the blanket, reaching out toward her.

"Clara..." Julian rasped, his voice barely a whisper above the sound of the monitor. "I'm sorry... I didn't know."

Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, then reached out and took his cold hand in hers. "I know, Julian. It's okay."

"No, it's not okay," Julian whispered, his grip suddenly tightening with surprising strength as his eyes locked onto hers with absolute terror. "You need to leave the city tonight. Mother has already signed the transfer orders for the remaining assets. If you stay, they won't just frame you for embezzlement... they'll make sure you disappear permanently."

Before Clara could answer, the door behind them swung wide open, and Marcus walked in flanked by two armed men in plainclothes who didn't look like local police.
