Chapter 7 - The Ghost from the Past

The downtown precinct's holding area smelled of wet asphalt and old paper. Clara sat on a wooden bench near the precinct's glass partition, her white lace wedding dress now stained with dust along the hem, watching as a tall, familiar figure walked down the corridor flanked by two officers.
It was David Chen. He looked older, his hair slightly graying at the temples, wearing an expensive designer coat that contrasted sharply with the sterile gray walls of the police station.
As David caught sight of Clara through the glass, he stopped dead in his tracks. A slow, tired smile crossed his face—not the grin of an enemy, but the weary expression of an old friend who had run out of places to hide.
"Clara," David said softly as the officer pushed open the heavy glass door and led him into the small consultation room where she was waiting.
"You son of a bitch," Clara hissed, leaping to her feet before restraint took over and she forced herself back down onto the bench. "You left me to take the fall for the boutique's collapse three years ago, and now you show up here?"
David held up his hands in a placating gesture, sitting down slowly across from her. "I didn't come back to finish you off, Clara. I came back because I realized Eleanor Vance was never going to let either of us walk away alive."
Clara stared at him, her heart skipping a beat. "What do you know about Eleanor?"
"Everything," David said, leaning forward and lowering his voice so the guard standing near the door couldn't hear. "The boutique didn't fail because of my mismanagement or your bad investments. Eleanor Vance bought out our primary investors six months before we launched. She wanted your startup dead so you'd be desperate enough to accept an entry-level job at her holding company—which is where she planned to trap you from day one."
The revelation hit Clara with the force of a freight train. Every missed opportunity, every sudden loan rejection, every closed door in the financial district—it wasn't bad luck. It was engineered. Eleanor had orchestrated her entire professional ruin years in advance just to ensure Clara would arrive at the Vance family doorstep with zero leverage and zero credibility.
"Why?" Clara whispered, a cold tremor running through her hands. "Why go to such absurd lengths just to ruin a wedding?"
"Because you found the ledger," David said quietly, watching her reaction closely. "The real one. The one detailing how the Vance family washed fifty million dollars through your startup's shell accounts before you even met Julian."
Clara’s mind raced back to her old digital files, remembering a stray, encrypted folder she had found on the company server weeks before the wedding—a folder she had backed up onto her personal flash drive just before packing her bags.
Suddenly, the holding room door flew open again, and Detective Miller rushed inside, holding a glowing tablet high in the air.

"Ms. Hayes, Mr. Chen—you need to see this," Miller said, his voice breathless. "Julian Vance just checked himself into a private hospital downtown. He swallowed an entire bottle of sleeping pills twenty minutes after leaving the precinct."
