Chapter 5 - The Offshore Trap

Marcus Vance froze, the cold, composed veneer he had maintained all evening cracking instantly as the words sunk in. He snatched the flashing tablet from the guard’s hand, his eyes darting frantically across the scrolling lines of red financial code.

"That's impossible," Marcus muttered, his face turning an alarming shade of pale. "Julian is in the conference room signing annulment papers. He doesn't even have his laptop."

Clara watched the color drain from Marcus's face with a strange, dark satisfaction. The tables had turned, though she had no idea who was pulling the strings now. "Looks like your family's golden boy has a few secrets of his own," she said softly, straightening her posture and brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead.

Marcus glared at her, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "This is your doing. You planted a backdoor script before the ceremony."

"I was too busy trying to keep the florist from walking out with the centerpieces to hack an offshore bank account, Marcus," Clara retorted sharply, her voice ringing with newfound authority. "Though I have to admit, watching your family's empire crumble from the inside is a nice consolation prize for having my wedding ruined."

Before Marcus could lunge forward, his phone began to vibrate violently in his breast pocket. He pulled it out with a shaking hand, answered on the second ring, and pressed it hard against his ear.

"Mother... yes, I see the alert," Marcus snapped into the phone, pacing across the hardwood floor. "No, I'm with Clara now. She—wait, what do you mean the police are downstairs?"

Clara’s breath caught. Police? This was moving far faster than a standard civil annulment or a messy family dispute. If the SEC was involved and local law enforcement was already on-site, someone had deliberately escalated this into a criminal matter before the reception even ended.

Marcus ended the call abruptly, shoving the phone back into his pocket while staring at Clara with a mixture of hatred and sheer panic. "You set up a dead-man's switch," he accused, his voice rising in pitch. "The moment the wedding was cancelled, an automated script executed the transfer to frame us."

"You give me way too much credit," Clara replied coldly, though her own mind was racing. She hadn't set up any switch. But someone had anticipated every single move the Vance family was going to make today.

A sharp knock echoed at the open door, and two uniformed police officers stepped into the private lounge, flanked by a tall man in a sharp grey suit holding a federal warrant.

"Marcus Vance?" the lead officer asked, his hand resting near his holster. "And Clara Vance—pardon, Ms. Clara Hayes?"

"I'm Clara," she said, stepping forward cautiously.

"We have a warrant to seize all personal electronic devices belonging to immediate family members and affiliates in connection with an international money laundering probe," the federal agent announced, holding up the crisp paper.

Marcus took a step back, raising his hands defensively. "This is a mistake. We are the victims here—our company accounts were just breached!"

"Tell it to the judge," the agent replied coldly, nodding to the officers. "Take them both."
