Chapter 2 - The Envelope of Secrets

Clara’s hands shook violently as her fingers brushed against the rough texture of the manila folder resting on the polished table. The ballroom was now entirely silent save for the distant hum of the venue's industrial air conditioning unit.

"I won't look at whatever lies you fabricated," Clara whispered, though her eyes were helplessly drawn to the corner of a document peeking out from beneath the flap—a bank statement bearing her own social security number alongside a staggering six-figure balance.

Eleanor Vance crossed her arms, the sparkling embroidery on her navy blue dress catching the ambient light like tiny, cold stars. "Fabricated? My dear, Julian’s forensic accountants don't manufacture numbers. They simply uncover the financial sinkhole you've been dragging my family name into for the past three years."

Clara swallowed hard, forcing her chin up despite the burning humiliation pooling in her chest. "Julian knows about my startup investments. We talked about the risks before we ever sent out save-the-dates."

"Risk is investing capital in a viable product," Eleanor snapped, her voice dropping an octave as she stepped closer, invading Clara’s personal space with predatory grace. "What you did was embezzle funds from your previous employer to keep your failing digital boutique afloat just long enough to trap my son into a legal partnership."

The accusation hit Clara like a physical blow. She staggered back a half-step, her white lace train rustling against the hardwood floor. "That is an outright lie. The audit cleared me completely."

"The audit was suppressed by a lawyer you haven't paid in six months," Eleanor countered smoothly, tapping the manila folder with a manicured fingernail. "Julian signed the marriage license this morning, yes. But he hasn't signed the community property waiver. And as of ten minutes ago, his legal team filed for an absolute annulment based on material fraud."

Clara felt the room tilt sideways. The elaborate floral arrangements, the ice sculpture melting slowly near the buffet, the empty tables meant for three hundred elite guests—it all suddenly felt like a meticulously staged execution.

"Where is Julian?" Clara demanded, her voice rising in desperate defiance. "If he wants to annul our marriage, he can look me in the eye and say it himself, not hide behind his mother's expensive Italian leather handbag!"

Eleanor’s smile widened, chillingly pleasant. She tapped her phone screen twice and turned it around so Clara could see a live security feed of the private VIP lounge down the hall. Julian sat at a mahogany desk, signing his name to a thick stack of papers without once looking up at the camera.
